The Human RightS Initiative (HRSI) invites applications for a one–day intensive workshop on Contemporary Slavery and Human Trafficking in Human Rights Perspective. The one-day course is intended to provide a comprehensive overview of human trafficking and contemporary slavery. The issue has been subject to increased attention, funding and policy interventions, yet general misconceptions persist. The course will identify and address these misconceptions, and will further provide an overview of the global context, the nature of the problem, the current debates, and emerging trends. Particular focus will be directed toward issues related to intervention, abolition and emancipation, interrelated issues about which little is known. A final workshop will allow for the practical application of key concepts identified in the course.
The workshop will take place at CEU on Saturday, April 5 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., conducted by Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick, assistant professor at the School of Public Policy. Choi-Fitzpatrick has more than a dozen years’ experience in the field of human trafficking and contemporary slavery. He has trained law enforcement and advocacy groups on the US-Mexico border and conducted investigations and research in India. His current book project investigates how human rights interventions impact slaveholders in rural India. His previous book, co-edited with Alison Brysk, promotes a human rights approach to this issue (“From Human Trafficking to Human Rights”, University of Pennsylvania, 2012). His broader research focus is on social movements to end human rights violations. He holds a PhD from the University of Notre Dame (United States) and an MA in International Administration from the Korbel School at the University of Denver.
