The Department of Political Science hosted a project aimed at measuring populism among chief executives in Central and Eastern Europe, the Baltic states and former Soviet republics. The project was led by Kirk Hawkins, associate professor of political science at Brigham Young University and Robert Sata of CEU. 56 CEU masters and doctoral students from eight departments were trained on how to measure populism in a three-day workshop before analyzing political speeches in local languages and coding them into English. Individual results fed into a common database to be used in studies of populism in the region.
