School of Public Policy Names Michael Dorsch Assistant Professor

CEU’s School of Public Policy named Michael Dorsch assistant professor starting in its inaugural year, 2013/14. Dorsch comes to SPP with experience teaching at Miami University, the University of Illinois, and the American University of Paris. He is an applied economist whose research and teaching interests are mainly in public economics and political economics. His current research focuses on the political economy of development, with particular emphasis on the economic causes and consequences of political instability, civil conflict, and democratization.

Dorsch's previous research has explored topics including the political economy of special-interest legislation in the United States, the role of social mobility in the political economy of taxation, and the economics of pro-environmental behavior. He has published papers in interdisciplinary journals including Public Choice, New Perspectives on Political Economy, and Social Science Quarterly.

At SPP, Dorsch will teach the fundamentals of economic analysis for public policy and public economic theory. He joins the school after five years as a professor in Paris where, in addition to teaching economics, he gave bicycle tours of the city. Dorsch received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2008.
