Hungarian Deputy Prime Minister Tibor Navracsics appointed Karoly Bard, chair of CEU’s Human Rights Program, a member of the committee responsible for drafting Hungary's new code of criminal procedure. The committee is comprised of experts representing academia, the Hungarian Bar, the Curia of Hungary (the country’s highest judicial authority), and the Prosecution Service (an independent body led by the Prosecutor General). Based on scientific consensus among the members, the new code is intended to respond with well-founded solutions to the practical problems of the current one. Current plans call for the new code to be debated and voted on during the 2014-2018 parliamentary cycle.
