Following a review of the university’s legal needs, an ad-hoc committee appointed by the rector recommended that CEU create a position for its first in-house legal counsel. The recommendation was accepted by the administration and strongly endorsed by the CEU Board of Trustees. Following a search process, Irisz Szel was hired for the post, effective immediately. Szel is a CEU alumna, (LLM, 2004), whose work experience includes positions at PricewaterhouseCoopers and CMS Cameron McKenna International. Recently she was head of the legal department at a large multinational company in the energy sector.
Szel is a full-time CEU employee, reporting to Chief Operating Officer Liviu Matei. Her office is in Nador 13, Room 117. She can be reached via email at Szeli@ceu.hu or by phone at extension 2929. All requests for legal advice or assistance in connection with CEU's operations should be addressed to her. Her primary responsibility is to make sure such requests are answered as needed.
CEU will retain two outside counsels, one in Hungary (Tamas Kende/Kende law firm) and one in the U.S. (Marty Michaelson/Hogan Lovells US LLP). Szel will decide, in consultation with the administration, at least at the beginning, when the advice of the outside counsels would be needed and will contact them directly in such cases.
