Modifications to CEU’s Admissions Policy Enter into Force

February 8, 2016

The CEU Senate decision to modify CEU’s Admissions Policy, taken at the last Senate meeting on November 27, 2015, entered into force on February 8, 2016.

All policies can be accessed online through the CEU Document Repository at http://documents.ceu.edu using Novell ID and password.

CEU Admissions Policy and Procedureshttp://documents.ceu.edu/documents/p-0910-1-v1511

Three key modifications have been introduced:

 -  Applicants holding a 3-year bachelor’s degree should enter 2-year master’s programs only (Bologna 3+2 structure), otherwise they may face problems when applying for doctoral degrees in Europe and possibly with degree recognition on the European job market. CEU has faced such complaints from its graduates in the past. In exceptional cases exemptions from this rule may be granted by the Provost. (Section 2.1.1);

 - Candidates who have started a master’s or doctoral program at another higher education institution but not finished it cannot continue their studies at CEU. If accepted to CEU, they have to pass the entire study program. In line with the CEU Transfer of Credit Policy, a limited number of credits earned during the previous enrollment at another institution may be transferable. (Section 2.1.4);

 - In line with legal requirements, the policy needs to outline the process of establishing acceptance/merit lists. In order for the academic selection of candidates to be transparent and traceable, admissions committees need a clear evaluation process when ranking candidates. The grading/point system should be documented, and scores need to be entered and justifiable for each candidate.  In the case of appeals, the CEU Grievance Committee should be able to review all related documentation leading to a candidate’s rejection or acceptance. (Section 4.3).
