Essay guidelines for the BA in Culture, Politics and Society (short: CPS)

Please identify what you see as the most important challenge we are facing today. This can be of a social, political, cultural, economic, or environmental nature - or a combination. How do you see a degree in CPS as helping make sense of this challenge, and of trying to tackle it?

We are not looking for a full and final answer to the question, but for evidence of a genuine engagement with a problem that is of concern to you, and a desire to gain the knowledge and tools necessary to analyze it and consider solutions. If you have not studied relevant subjects at school, do not worry — ideas from your existing studies, and from following news and media, may stimulate interest in issues and questions which can then be addressed through your studies in CPS.

Essay guidelines for the BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (short: PPE)

Tell us about your interest in a question which has a connection with philosophy or politics or economics. For example: what makes societies fair or just? Can an artificial intelligence really think? What is the justification for democracy? Are we ever genuinely free to choose what to do? These are just examples — feel free to pick your own question.

We are not looking for a full and final answer to the question, but for evidence of a genuine interest in these topics, and a real engagement with a question that puzzles you. If you have not studied these subjects at school, do not worry — ideas from the study of science or literature or history or other subjects may stimulate interest in questions which can then be addressed in your study of PPE.

6. Letter of Recommendation

Please have one confidential letter of recommendation submitted as part of your application. The recommendation should include information about your academic achievement and potential, skills, abilities, strengths, motivation, and character, as well as comments on your disciplinary record. The letter must be written in English by one of your teachers or counselors and sent via the online application system by the recommender directly. (You must not know the contents of the letter and therefore cannot submit it yourself.) If you are applying for both BA programs, you will have to register a referee for each application separately.

In order to enable your recommender to send in his/her letter, please register him/her in the appropriate section of the online application form AND submit your application; your recommender will only receive an email with a link to the recommendation form after you have submitted your application. The recommendation must be received within one week of receipt of your application. A late recommendation may or may not be considered.
