Leading Czech Newspaper Ranks CEU Legal Studies Faculty First in Central Europe

March 2, 2011

Budapest, 2 March, 2011—One of the most prominent newspapers in the Czech Republic, Lidove noviny, recently published an article on law faculties in Central Europe in which CEU's Department of Legal Studies, headed by Stefan Messmann, ranked first. Included in the survey, in addition to CEU, were: Ludwig Maximilian University and Humboldt University in Germany; Vienna University in Austria; the law faculties at the universities of Warsaw, and Krakow, in Poland; Komensky University and University of Pavel Josef Safarik in Slovakia; and Charles University in Prague, Masaryk University in Brno, Palacky University in Olomouc and law faculties in Pilsner and Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic.

As the basis for its analysis, the survey referenced in the article focused on publications released in 2009. Thirty-seven publications were produced during that year by CEU legal studies faculty, including contributions to two Oxford books (on the rule of law and on unfair banking practices), as well as to the Minnesota Journal on International Law. Among other positive traits, the article referenced the excellent teacher/student ratio within the department, of approximately 5 to 1, and the quality of its 14 permanent faculty. CEU’s Center for Ethics and Law in Biomedicine (CELAB) was also pointed out for its excellence in research on bio-bank regulations.

Founded in 1893, Lidove noviny is the Czech Republic's second highest-selling daily. See the full article in the Czech language: http://www.lidovky.cz/nejlepsi-fakulta-ve-stredni-evrope-duj-/ln_noviny.asp?c=A110221_000115_ln_noviny_sko&klic=241450&mes=110221_0

The article is also referred to on the website of the China-Europe School of Law in Beijing (http://www.cesl.edu.cn/eng/idxnewsview.asp?id=714), the only law school to be approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education under the "Sino-foreign Schools Agreement," and managed by a consortium of European law schools.
