CEU Debate Society members Alexandru Moise and Endre Borbath advanced to the finals of an international debate tournament in Split, Croatia (http://idebate.org/events/split-open-2013) , last month in a field of 20 teams from eight countries. The Department of Political Science duo, named “The Infallibles,” competed in logic, rhetoric, and argumentation. Their trip was sponsored by the society with the help from the University. The CEU Debate Society will also participate in the Belgrade Open International Tournament May 17-19 (http://belgrade-open.org/), an event that brings together 64 teams from all over the world. In June, the society and its counterparts at Corvinus and ELTE universities will host another international tournament as part of the “Global Debate and Public Policy Challenge” ( http://gdppc.idebate.org/) event supported by the Open Society Foundations. The public is welcome. In August—also with University support—a team will represent CEU at the European Debating Championship in Manchester ( http://manchestereuros.eu/).
In other debating news, CEU alumna Ana Gurau (Public Policy 2011) and future CEU student Zsofia Muranyi (Political Science 2014) published the How to Organize a Debate Tournament handbook of practical advice on how to organize debate tournaments on university campuses ( http://www.europe.idebate.org/content/how-organize-international-debate-...). The two based their recommendations on Budapest Open 2012 (http://debatehungary.com/), the first international British Parliamentary debate competition in Hungary, hosted by CEU in March 2012.
