This one-day workshop, to be held at CEU on Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., will focus on the impact of drug policies on human rights in the global context. Students will gain familiarity with the history, institutions and mechanisms of the international drug control system, with an emphasis on recent barriers and challenges. The course aims to compare variations in drug policy responses that exist across countries and examine the tensions between abstinence-only and harm reduction paradigms. The workshop will have a special focus on documentary films as advocacy tools and aim to develop an understanding of the use of videos and innovative online tools in advocacy. The workshop will be conducted by Peter Sarosi, Drug Policy Program Director of the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union (HCLU), a human rights NGO based in Budapest. He is the editor of the Drugreporter website (drugreporter.net) and the director of hundreds of short online documentaries on various issues of drug policy. He is the Steering Committee member of the Eurasian Harm Reduction Network (EHRN) and the Core Group member of the Civil Society Forum on Drugs, an expert group of the European Commission. He is also a CEU alumnus.
