Visa/Residence Documents

This section provides information about visa application and residence requirements in Hungary for all CEU students. Please review the table below or menu to the left, and select the category which applies to your circumstances. Students holding multiple passports are advised to choose the easiest way to settle their residence status in Hungary: European Union citizens receive their legal documents rather easily, involving minimal efforts.

Identity Documents

Hungary joined the Schengen Area in late 2007 and consequently the country has tightened its security within its borders.

Foreigners in Hungary are required by law to carry with them a proper identity document and show it to the local authorities upon request. So please ensure to carry your passport along with your residence permit OR identification document (national ID card/passport) along with your registration card at all times: those failing to show a valid passport or national ID card are subject to a fine up to 150.000 HUF.

According to Hungarian law, international students at CEU must fulfill all requirements for residency in Hungary: failure to do so will result in the termination of their enrollment.
