Budapest Open 2015

CEU was transformed into an arena of clashing ideas, as it hosted the fourth edition of the Budapest Open International Debate Tournament. In what is the largest student organized event at CEU, 128 debaters, representing more than 50 institutions, coming from over 25 countries, tackled some of the most important challenges to democratic societies today. Among the topics contested were voting rights, political correctness, labor regulations regarding freelancers, the banning of advertising, and the right to restrict oil and gas drilling by referendum. Ultimately, the champions of the tournament, Nika Jelaska and Peer Klüßendorf, captured their title by winning over both judges and public, in arguing in favor of the final motion: "The Theory of Communism is Immoral".

The event kicked off  with an inspiring lecture on public speaking by Michael Shapira, professional public speaking trainer and former World Champion debater. The main event of the Tournament, the Final Debate, took place in the newly renovated October Hall.

CEU Students participate in the 28th “SPAR Budapest Maraton Fesztival”

Mens sana in corpore sano (a healthy mind in a healthy body). That’s what 35 CEU students had in mind when they participated in two separate running events during the Spar Marathon Festival on October 13 in Budapest.

One group of 31  students – sponsored by the Student Life Office – opted for the simple “Maratonka”, a distance which covered less than three kilometers.

Another group of four students accepted the challenge of running the relay marathon of 42 km. Their finishing time was a memorable 3 hours 46 minutes.

[[{"attributes":{},"fields":{}}]]The start and finish of this annual running competition took place around Heroes’ Square, while the running track covered major parts of Budapest and the beautiful green area of the City Park. The marathon festival attracted this year 3000 athletes from 68 countries and a total record number of 22000 runners.

All CEU students enjoyed the run and the marvelous sunny autumn weather. Most of them are already looking forward to the next running event.

CEU Debate Society

In October 2010, alumna Maja Nenadovic offered a series of workshops in public speaking, British Parliamentary debate and argumentation. Some 50 students took part. Then a small group of enthusiasts decided to organize the CEU Debate Society. Now, debate practice takes place on a weekly basis.

The Society's members have participated in the Belgrade Open as well as the European University Debate Championship in Galway, Ireland in 2011. In March 2012, the CEU Debate Society, in cooperation with Corvinus Vitaklub, organized and co-hosted the first British Parliamentary international tournament in Hungary, Budapest Open 2012 with 48 teams from 30 countries.

Two teams represented CEU at EUDC 2012 in Belgrade, and the Society repeated the Budapest Open experience in March 2013, bringing in ELTE Vitaklub to the organizing committee as well. This time, we had 52 competing teams and most certainly an even better tournament. For more info, visit and

CEU Students Run for Cancer Research in Hungary

40 CEU students, sponsored by the Student Life Office, participated in the annual Charity Run for Cancer Research in Hungary (formerly known as the Terry Fox Run). The event was organized by the "Fuss a Rakkutatasert" Cancer Foundation in Hungary. This was the sixth time CEU took part in this event, which drew more than one thousand athletes in the Puskas Ferenc Stadium. All students finished the two kilometers distance within a short time, and given the optimal weather circumstances some even decided to run an additional lap.
