CEU network scientists Roberta Sinatra and Albert-Laszlo Barabasi's research on quantifying the success of academics in the fields of physics, economics, ecology, cognitive science, neuroscience, biology and chemistry was published today in Science. Sinatra and Barabasi along with researchers at a number of other institutions in the U.S.

The Aleppo Project has recently introduced another valuable study for anyone who is interested in finding out about what has happened in and to Aleppo in recent years. The Aleppo Conflict Timeline begins in 2012 when the armed conflict in Syria reached Aleppo.

CEU departments, schools and research centers currently host 16 visiting research fellows from three continents in the framework of the Higher Education Support Program of the Open Society Foundations (CEU/HESP) Visiting Research Fellowship program. In AY 2015-16 altogether 24 fellows will visit CEU during the Fall, Winter and Spring terms.

Popular culture makes us believe that cryptography is an intellectual challenge surrounded by mystery. Laszlo Csirmaz, professor in CEU’s Department of Mathematics and Its Applications and the Computer and Statistics Center, started researching cryptography, secret sharing in particular, so long ago that he’s not sure now what drove him to the subject at first. However, he still finds recovering secrets fascinating.

Drugs aren't just being bought, sold, and fought over in the terrestrial world. In recent years, illegal drug sales have flourished on the so-called Dark Net, part of the Internet that is only accessible via special software. U.S. and UK law enforcement agencies have shut down well-known suppliers and perhaps the Internet's most notorious peddler of illegal goods, Dread Pirate Roberts (Ross Ulbricht) of the defunct site Silk Road, is now behind bars and facing a life sentence in the U.S.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), since 1992, a staggering 1,072 journalists have been killed and in more than half of these cases, the murderers went unpunished. Recently, the beheadings of two Western journalists at the hands of ISIS shocked the world and, perhaps, opened more people's eyes to the dangers journalists face. However, threats, harassment and bodily injury are not limited to journalists working in war zones or those who live and work in places where media is tightly controlled.

This May, the Court of Justice of the European Union passed the “Right to Be Forgotten” ruling, a landmark proposal meant to strengthen already-existing protections of European citizens' personal data by erasing personal online data after it is no longer necessary. The previous legislation (dating back to 1995) was out of synch with the digital age and, as Director of CEU's Center for Media, Data and Society (CMDS) Phil Howard is highlighting in his latest research, Europeans had cause for concern.

But imagine a four-ton elephant ramming through an electric fence and trampling your crops or a lion on the hunt for your cattle. These are very real issues for people who live on and work the land surrounding the 2-million hectare, world-renowned Kruger National Park (KNP) in South Africa.
