Budapest, Sept. 15, 2016 – Today Central European University opens two state-of-the-art buildings in downtown Budapest, offering high-tech space for learning, teaching, research, and the exchange of ideas in line with the University’s commitment to open debate and community engagement. The two buildings, one of which retains its historic façade and interior elements, and both of which feature green technology, represent the completion of Phase I of a three-phase campus redevelopment project.

Budapest, August 25, 2016 – Longtime activists and Roma scholars Iulius Rostas and Angela Kocze were named Chair/Assistant Professor and Assistant Professor, respectively, of CEU's recently launched Roma in European Societies (RES) initiative. Rostas brings nearly two decades of professional and academic experience to the position and has been affiliated with CEU for several years as a visiting lecturer and an Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) fellow.

Budapest, May 26, 2016 – Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF, known as Doctors Without Borders in English) has been named the winner of the 2016 CEU Open Society Prize in recognition of the courageous humanitarian leadership the organization has shown throughout the world. The award, given annually, was first presented to Sir Karl Popper in 1994. Subsequent winners include Vaclav Havel, Arpad Goncz, Ricardo Lagos, Carla Del Ponte, Kofi Annan, Javier Solana, Kristalina Georgieva and Richard C. Holbrooke.

Dr. Michael Ignatieff, Edward R. Murrow Professor of Practice of the Press, Politics, and Public Policy at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, international commentator on contemporary issues of democracy, human rights, and governance, has been unanimously elected CEU’s fifth president and rector by the University’s Senate and the Board of Trustees.

University of Glasgow Professor of Public Law Jim Murdoch was chosen as the recipient of the fifth annual European Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Social Sciences and Humanities. The award, initiated by the Central European University’s Provost and Pro-Rector Liviu Matei and overseen by the University’s Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), aims to promote excellence in teaching across the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). Murdoch will be given the Award and its accompanying €5,000 Diener Prize at CEU's Opening Ceremony for the 2016-17 academic year in September.

Flow theory and management education will be transformed by the learning and research potential of the online management simulation game FLIGBY, said Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, author of the seminal book Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, speaking at CEU Business School in Budapest Nov. 9. Analysis of the vast amounts of data collected in the cloud by tens of thousands of online players will provide important insight into decision-making and management behavior, he said.

Central European University (CEU)'s Open Society Archives (OSA) will be renamed the Vera and Donald Blinken Open Society Archives in honor of the couple, who have provided a major bequest to sustain the institution. Their gift will create a permanent endowed fund, which will allow the Archives to expand its critical work in preserving one of the world's most valuable archival collections related to the Cold War, human rights movements and grave international human rights violations.
