Budapest, September 27, 2012—Associate Professor Miklos Koren and Professor Botond Koszegi of the CEU Department of Economics have been awarded the prestigious Starting Grant of the European Research Council (ERC). Professor Koren received €1.314 million for research on “Measuring Knowledge Flows from Developed Countries to Central and Eastern Europe.” Professor Koszegi received €1.275 million for research on “Behavioral Theory and Economic Applications.” Koren and Koszegi are the only recipients of the ERC Starting Grants from Hungary this year.

Yehuda Elkana, the third President and Rector of Central European University (1999-2009), died in Jerusalem on September 21, 2012, after a battle with cancer bravely borne. He was 78. Elkana was an Auschwitz survivor who became an international scholar and public intellectual with a deep commitment to open society.

Educational barriers for Romani youth remain a crucial challenge for European human rights. In the new release from CEU Press and the Roma Education Fund (REF) “Ten Years After: A History of Roma School Desegregation in Central and Eastern Europe,” edited by Iulius Rostas, contributors make a thorough assessment of the public policy initiatives undertaken in the past decade. The book focuses on past initiatives and present challenges but also has broader importance: to frame Romani institutional discrimination as a key policy debate for European and global human rights.

According to the latest QS rankings by subject fields, released in July 2012, CEU’s programs in political science and international relations (which, at CEU, includes courses in public policy), sociology, and philosophy—similarly to last year—are among the world’s best. Furthermore, CEU is the only university in Hungary with programs among the best 200 in the 2012 subject rankings.

Budapest, 7 June 2012— More than 600 Central European University students from more than 70 countries will receive their Master's or doctoral degrees this Thursday, June 14, at the University's 21st graduation ceremony. They join a body of more than 10,000 CEU alumni who are beginning to distinguish themselves as the next generation of leaders and scholars in this region and beyond. Humanitarian and co-founder of Doctors Without Borders and Doctors of the World Bernard Koucher will deliver the commencement address.
