CEU follows with great concern the developments regarding the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA). In the context of the continuing restrictions affecting democratic freedoms in Hungary, we see both the freedom of research and the professional careers of our MTA colleagues as being put at risk. Historically, MTA has been the most important scientific institution in Hungary, its outstanding work benefiting the entire Hungarian society.

Because Hungary’s Lex CEU forbids Central European University (CEU) to accept new students after January 1, 2019, CEU is forced to announce today that it will launch all U.S.-accredited degree programs in Vienna in September 2019. It is making the announcement today in order to guarantee that it can recruit students in time for the beginning of the next academic year.

Dear Mr. Foreign Minister:
In remarks to the press earlier this week, you gave the clearest indication yet that on January 1, 2019 your government will force CEU out of Hungary.
You assert that CEU has not established educational activity in the State of New York. This will obviously be the basis on which the government justifies its decision.

Central European University (CEU) welcomes the support of the more than 60-member, bipartisan Transatlantic Democracy Working Group of former senior U.S. government officials, national security experts, and scholars. The organization, whose statement can be read here, called the threat to CEU’s operations and academic freedom a threat to U.S.-Hungarian relations.
