CEU to Open Vienna Campus for U.S. Degrees in 2019; University Determined to Uphold Academic Freedom

Budapest, October 25, 2018 —The Board of Trustees of Central European University (CEU) announced today that incoming students for its U.S.-accredited masters and doctoral programs will study at a new campus in Vienna beginning in the academic year 2019-20. The Trustees authorized the move as of December 1, 2018 because the Hungarian government has not concluded an agreement allowing CEU to operate in freedom in Hungary as a U.S. institution chartered in New York State.

Budapest, October 22, 2018 — Laszlo Lovasz of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Albert-Laszlo Barabasi of Central European University (CEU), and Jaroslav Nesetril of Charles University in Prague have been awarded a six-year grant supporting network science research by the European Research Council (ERC) totaling almost EUR10 million.

Central European University’s MS in Business Analytics program is the best in Central Europe, including Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, according to the latest Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings’ QS Business Masters Rankings report released September 25. CEU’s program ranked 50th in the world, QS said. Regional rankings were not issued separately - they are derived from the overall rankings.

Professor Katharine Sarikakis, Professor of Communication Science, Director of the Media Governance and Industries Research Lab, and Jean Monnet Chair of European Media Governance and Integration at the University of Vienna, is the winner of the 2018 European Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Social Sciences and Humanities, bestowed by CEU. Sarikakis received the Award and the accompanying €5,000 Diener Prize from CEU President and Rector Michael Ignatieff today.

Budapest, August 28, 2018 – CEU has been forced to announce the immediate suspension, with effect as of August 24, of its education programs for registered refugees and asylum seekers, the Open Learning Initiative (OLIve), together with the administration of its European Union-funded Marie Curie Research Grant on migration policy in Central and Southern Europe.

Budapest, August 16, 2018 — CEU condemns recent unfounded attacks against Gender Studies programs in Hungary. Gender Studies is an internationally recognized academic field, which produces intellectually and socially relevant knowledge and which has been taught at our university for well over a decade. Our graduates are exceptionally successful at finding employment in the international job market. Eliminating the program would be a loss to the Hungarian scholarly community and would further limit academic freedom in the country.

Budapest, July 19. – CEU Professor Gergely Csibra has been made a Fellow of the prestigious British Academy for the humanities and social sciences.
Professor Csibra (Department of Cognitive Science) was elected to the fellowship in recognition of his work studying the cognitive capacities of infants.
