Budapest, June 26, 2018 – Having fulfilled its obligations under Hungarian law and faced with the Hungarian government’s continuing refusal to bring the lex CEU matter to a conclusion, the university’s Board of Trustees, at their June 23 meeting authorized CEU to open recruitment for Budapest for the academic year 2019-2020, according to the University’s regular recruitment schedule. They also strongly re-affirmed their commitment to the university in all circumstances.

Budapest, June 20, 2018 – Central European University expresses its solidarity with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and its researchers in the face of recent attacks in the press and the government’s new policies relating to scientific research funding. It is vital for the future of academic freedom in Hungary that the Academy conserve its right to govern itself and to allocate resources for research on scientific criteria alone.

Budapest, June 14 2018 –Central European University is awarding its highest honor, the Open Society Prize, to the distinguished Hungarian economist Janos Kornai in recognition of his work in inspiring economic transition in former communist societies. Created in 1994, the award has been given to Karl Popper, Vaclav Havel, Arpad Goncz, Tom Lantos, Bronislaw Geremek, Ricardo Lagos, Carla Del Ponte, Kofi Annan, Richard C. Holbrooke, Joachim Gauck and Kristalina Georgieva, among others. The Prize will be presented to Kornai at CEU's commencement ceremony in Budapest on June 22.

Central European University (CEU) announces that University Professor Gabor Klaniczay, founding faculty of the Department of Medieval Studies, has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Founded in 1780, the Academy honors exceptional scholars, leaders, artists, and innovators and engages them in sharing knowledge and addressing challenges facing the world.

Budapest, March 21 – CEU Professor Andrea Peto will be awarded the 2018 All European Academies Madame de Staël Prize for Cultural Values to honor her wide-ranging scholarly work on gender studies and European contemporary history. The Madame de Staël Prize Jury considered her research an exceptional contribution to shed light on Europe’s gendered memory of the Second World War, the Holocaust and political extremism.

Budapest/Vienna March 12, 2018 -- Central European University (CEU) and the City of Vienna announce that they are in negotiations about a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that would enable CEU to open a satellite campus site in Vienna, complementing its home campus in Budapest and its American site at Bard College in New York State. As the largest German-speaking university city close to CEU’s home base in Budapest, Vienna offers ideal conditions for a new site. On the basis of the MoU, the Otto Wagner area will be examined as a possible location.

Central European University is pleased to announce that the university’s Hungarian legal entity (Kozep-europai Egyetem) was reaccredited by the Hungarian Accreditation Committee (MAB) following a review, which takes place every five years. Separately, we are pleased to announce that five of CEU’s academic programs were ranked among the top 100 in the world, and two others in the top 200, by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) in its global subject rankings, released today.
