Any academic associated with CEU is a distinguished scholar who has earned an appointment at the university through peer-reviewed publications and a strong teaching reputation.

Budapest/Vienna March 12, 2018 -- Central European University (CEU) and the City of Vienna announce that they are in negotiations about a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that would enable CEU to open a satellite campus site in Vienna, complementing its home campus in Budapest and its American site at Bard College in New York State. As the largest German-speaking university city close to CEU’s home base in Budapest, Vienna offers ideal conditions for a new site. On the basis of the MoU, the Otto Wagner area will be examined as a possible location.

October 13, 2017 – CEU welcomes any initiative that reduces uncertainty, but the Minister of Justice’s proposed extension of the deadline prolongs the uncertainty while walking away from a solution that lies at hand.
An agreement between the State of New York and the Government of Hungary guaranteeing CEU’s existence is ready for signature. Resolution of this matter is now up to the government. The government can simply sign the agreement it has already negotiated.

Budapest, October 17, 2017 – Central European University (CEU) states that it has taken all steps to fulfill the conditions of the amended Hungarian higher education law known as ‘lex CEU,’ and presents documents supporting its full compliance with the condition regarding educational activities in our institution’s country of origin.

October 11, 2017 – Today is the first deadline to be met for foreign higher education institutions wishing to continue their operations in Hungary under the new Hungarian higher education law—“lex CEU.” CEU continues its operations uninterrupted. Indeed the re-accreditation of the University by Hungarian higher education authorities is proceeding as normal. As always, CEU will comply with all Hungarian regulatory processes and requirements.
The next deadline is January 1, 2018, which requires that an agreement between Hungary and New York State be in place.

CEU formally began its new Academic Year today, welcoming students, faculty, staff and distinguished guests with an Opening Ceremony held in the spirit of free inquiry, diversity, and open society that are the hallmarks of CEU.
President and Rector Michael Ignatieff welcomed more than 700 new students from more than 90 countries to the CEU community, which now includes 1,500 students and hundreds of staff and faculty, as well as 14,000 alumni worldwide.

Budapest, June 24, 2017 – CEU welcomes the statement from New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo calling yesterday's discussions with Kristof Altusz, Hungarian deputy state secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, productive. CEU is not a participant in the negotiations, but we hope they lead to a solution that enables CEU to remain in Budapest as a free institution.

Budapest, June 23, 2017 – Today at Central European University's 26th graduation ceremony, 708 students from 97 countries received master's, doctoral degrees and non-degree certificates at Budapest's Palace of Arts (MUPA). The University also awarded the Open Society Prize to former German President Joachim Gauck in recognition of his courageous defense of human rights and his distinguished record in the service of free societies.

Budapest, May 30, 2017 – Central European University (CEU) announces plans to maintain all of its activities in Budapest in the 2017-2018 academic year. CEU hopes that current negotiations will rapidly lead to a long-term solution that allows CEU to remain in Budapest.
