Budapest, March 30, 2017 – Following a meeting with Hungarian government officials yesterday, Central European University (CEU) remains concerned the government does not yet fully realize the implications of the proposed legislation. It remains unclear to CEU why the legislation is necessary, given CEU's full compliance with Hungarian law, and widespread acknowledgement of CEU’s contributions to Hungarian academic life.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is lending €25 million to Central European University (CEU) to upgrade its campus located in the historic center of the Hungarian capital Budapest.
The EIB loan will finance the University’s urban campus development project comprising the renovation and construction of approximately 39,000 m2 of teaching, conference and research facilities. The project consolidates the University's academic and administrative entities on a single and cohesive campus with sufficient space and up-to-date facilities for students and staff.

Budapest, May 26, 2016 – Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF, known as Doctors Without Borders in English) has been named the winner of the 2016 CEU Open Society Prize in recognition of the courageous humanitarian leadership the organization has shown throughout the world. The award, given annually, was first presented to Sir Karl Popper in 1994. Subsequent winners include Vaclav Havel, Arpad Goncz, Ricardo Lagos, Carla Del Ponte, Kofi Annan, Javier Solana, Kristalina Georgieva and Richard C. Holbrooke.

Dr. Michael Ignatieff, Edward R. Murrow Professor of Practice of the Press, Politics, and Public Policy at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, international commentator on contemporary issues of democracy, human rights, and governance, has been unanimously elected CEU’s fifth president and rector by the University’s Senate and the Board of Trustees.

Central European University (CEU) is offering a number of full scholarship packages for Syrian citizens at the master's and doctoral level for Academic Year 2016/2017. Applications are welcome for all academic areas for the full length of the program. Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit.

Budapest, Sept. 14, 2015 – CEU President and Rector John Shattuck announced today he will step down at the end of this coming academic year, following CEU’s 25th anniversary. Shattuck will have served seven years in office by August 2016, the term he agreed to in 2013 when the university asked him to extend beyond his original four-year contract.

At its most recent meeting in July, the Board of Trustees of CEU voted unanimously to invite President and Rector John Shattuck to serve another term. Shattuck became CEU's fourth President and Rector in 2009.
