Philip N. Howard will join the CEU School of Public Policy (SPP) as a professor of media and communication policy and governance. Howard is currently a professor of communication, information and international studies at the University of Washington and a fellow at Princeton University's Center for Information Technology Policy. Howard also will become director of the Center for Media and Communication Studies (CMCS) at CEU, which is now part of SPP. CMCS Director Kate Coyer will continue as the Center's executive director.

The Hungarian Red Cross will operate a blood donor clinic on Feb. 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Popper Room (Monument Building, 1st floor, Room No 102). To register, participants will need to produce one form of ID from each of the following three categories: 1) official ID/driver’s license/passport; 2) residence card/residence permit; or 3) TAJ card/EU health insurance card (blue) or national social security card. After being registered, volunteers will receive a simple blood test to determine if they are eligible to participate.

The CEU Library now offers access to HeinOnline’s Law Journal Library, a comprehensive, image-based collection of more than 1,700 law and law-related periodicals beginning with the first issue ever published. The library, with its articles, comments, notes, book reviews, cases, decisions, and legislation, provides a comprehensive look at legal history. Journal titles of this collection can also be browsed in Journal Titles A to Z and all content is searchable via CompSearch, the Library's Google-like one-stop search tool.

One important project CEU undertook to mark its 20th anniversary was a documentary film produced by U.S. filmmaker Peter Almond. The film premiered in March 2012 at CEU and the Open Society Archives. Afterward, Almond produced four versions of the film: a lightly shorter full-length version of CEU20 (51 minutes), a condensed version of CEU20 (15 minutes), plus two very short versions for use with CEU friends, We Are CEU (6 minutes), and prospective students, Feed Your Mind. Find Your Passion. (3.5 minutes). The two CEU20 pieces are posted on CEU's video room and YouTube channel.

The Aleksanteri Institute, an independent institute of the University of Helsinki that is also known as the Finnish Centre for Russian and Eastern European Studies, invites applications for Aleksanteri Visiting Fellowships for the academic year 2013‑2014. Scholars holding a PhD degree and pursuing research that relates to the institute's research agenda are eligible for the fellowships, which carry a monthly stipend of €2,600 to cover all research visit expenses over two to three months. The Visiting Fellowship scheme is intended for scholars who reside outside of Finland.
