The Student Life Office, in collaboration with CEU's counseling professionals, the Alumni Relations and Career Services Office, the Center for Arts and Culture, the CEU Library, and the Student Union, hosted the second DeStress Week for the CEU community Nov. 11-15. Events included a stress-free zone in the Octagon and two stress management workshops plus a wine-tasting evening, film screening, meditation, yoga, and tips on other de-stressing tactics. The Center for Academic Writing will launch its first series of multidisciplinary dissertation writing workshops in January. The project is designed to help PhD students increase the accessibility of their research by improving the clarity of their writing for peer scholars from various disciplines. It also aims to stimulate junior researchers to think about cross-disciplinary issues and how perspectives from other disciplines can inform their own research. Sessions will be held twice monthly.

The CEU Open House, one of the most important domestic recruitment events of the year, will be held on Friday, Nov. 22. Faculty, staff, and students are invited to join the Student Recruitment team in welcoming prospective students on this day full of events, including presentations about academic programs, application instructions scholarship opportunities, and student life. Guests will have the opportunity to meet with community members who can answer questions and provide information about the programs and services available tor CEU students.

CEU Founder and Honorary Chairman George Soros received the Freedom Award from the International Rescue Committee Nov. 5 in recognition of his lifelong support of human rights and open society. During his acceptance speech, he announced a $1 million donation to help the IRC with humanitarian efforts in Syria, which he described as a glaring failure of international governance.

The Center for Media and Communication Studies at the School of Public Policy has announced the appointment of four leading and emerging media scholars and practitioners as fellows: Miklos Haraszti, a Hungarian author, professor, and human rights promoter who currently serves as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Belarus; Sandra Ristovska, a documentary filmmaker and doctoral student at the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania; Dean Starkman an award-winning journalist, editor of the Columbia Journalism Review and author of Th

After leading the CEU Library since its establishment 20 years ago, Maria Szlatky is retiring as director on Dec. 31. Under Szlatky’s leadership, CEU built one of the best English-language libraries in the social sciences and humanities in Europe. The Library has been at the core of CEU's academic endeavors and has contributed to all the University’s academic achievements. In recognition of her outstanding work, President and Rector John Shattuck has awarded Szlatky the title of Library Director Emerita.

Paul Collier, visiting professor at CEU’s School of Public Policy, received the A.SK Social Science Award from Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin fur Socialforschung. The €100,000 prize, awarded every two years, recognizes work in the social sciences that contributes to social and political reform. Collier gained an international audience with his 2007 book, The Bottom Billion, in which he examines the vicious circle of violence and poverty in the world’s poorest countries.
