Miklos Haraszti, visiting professor in the Department of Public Policy and United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Belarus, presented his first report to the UN General Assembly Oct. 28 in New York. He said that Belarus, the only country in Europe with no opposition in parliament, must guarantee a series of human rights in order to give effect to the right to elect and to be elected.

According to a survey Corporate Knights conducted to examine how universities are faring at integrating sustainability into the academic experience, CEU Business School’s full-time MBA program is among the world’s top 30 green MBA programs.

CEU and School of Public Policy Founder George Soros visited SPP on Oct. 9 to speak with members of the inaugural class of students about his philosophy—reflexivity—and about public policy careers. The discussion, moderated by Leonard Benardo, associate director of the Open Society Foundations, kicked off with a short presentation from the students on their backgrounds, passions, interests, and motivation for joining the school.

Former CEU student Giorgi Margvelashvili is Georgia's president-elect after winning the Oct. 24 election with nearly 64 percent of the votes. Angela Kocze, CPS researcher and doctoral graduate of CEU, has been chosen to receive the Ion Ratiu Democracy Award, given by the Woodrow Wilson Center honoring democracy advocates. Kocze, a leading Hungarian Roma rights activist and scholar, is currently a visiting assistant professor in the Department of Sociology at Wake Forest University as well as a research fellow at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

CEU’s Center for European Union Research (CEUR), represented by faculty members Marie-Pierre Granger, Andrea Krizsan, and Uwe Puetter, is part of a new European research consortium of 26 universities that won a joint bid for a €6.5 million research grant under the European Union Seventh Framework Programme. The “bEUcitizen,” project, which involves research from legal studies, sociology, political science, history, and economics, aims to study the implementation and practice of European Union citizenship. The consortium is led by the University of Utrecht.

Romania’s New Europe College – Institute for Advanced Study has announced a call for applications for fellowships for Academic Year 2014-15. Applicants holding a PhD or doctoral students in an advanced stage of research in the humanities, social studies, or economics, are eligible. Working languages are English, German, and French. Duration can be one term or the full academic year. The fellowship package includes a tax-free monthly stipend of €600, accommodation, round-trip transportation, and seasonal holidays.

CEU Press’ latest publication is a memoir by former New York Times reporter David Binder, based on interviews with many of the leading political figures of the BalkansC (which were known as Illyria in classical antiquity) C. Binder sought out regional intellectuals who Chad challenged their government in the communist era and whose observations offer insight into life in the Balkans during the last three decades of the Cold War.
