The Faculty of Arts and Sciences of the Silesian University in Opava, Czech Republic, is accepting applications for a four-month fellowship from March through June or September through December of this year. The fellowship, which carries a €1,200 monthly stipend, is for those with a PhD who have demonstrated excellence in research. Preference will be given to candidates who can teach in more than one department and have at least elementary communication skills in Czech. The application deadline is Jan. 31.

This book by Dragan Klaic, former visiting professor in the Department of Public Policy, who died in August 2011, was published posthumously by Intellect. In it, Klaic argues that public theater is best served not by imitating its commercial counterparts, but by asserting artistic distinctiveness in the public interest.

Andrea Peto, associate professor in the Department of Gender Studies, contributed a chapter entitled “Három háborús bűnös nő élettörténetének tanulsága” (Lessons from the life stories of three women convicted of war crimes) and Don Kalb, professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, contributed a chapter entitled “A pénz, a demosz és az etnikum mély “összjátéka” az új-régi Európában” (The deep “interplay” of money, people, and ethnicity in New-Old Europe). The book was published in 2012 by L’Harmattan.

CEU’s Open Society Archieves raised 2.4 million HUF for the Heated Street program run by Oltalom Karitativ Egyesulet at an auction of manuscripts donated by 60 well-known contemporary Hungarian poets, writers, and composers. The auction, held on the first day of winter, Dec. 21, and attended by about 100 people, was hosted by Galeria Centralis and organized in cooperation Sziget Kulturalis Szervezo Iroda, Magveto Konyvkiado and Summa Artium.

“Don—A Tragedy and its Afterlives” will be on display in OSA’s Galeria Centralis through March 3. It presents documents, photos, film and radio recordings, diary entries, and press reports of the Soviet assault on Hungarian forces at the Don River on Jan. 12, 1943, plus analysis of the tragedy since the fall of communism. The exhibition is open to the public for free.

Human RightS Initiative collected 73 boxes of Christmas gifts for children for the Shoebox Full of Love program and 40 large shopping bags full of clothing and shoes for homeless people in Budapest before the holidays. In its October food drive, HRSI collected 50 packages of pasta, 35 bags of rice, 10 bags of sugar, 10 cans of beans, 15 cans of corn, and other items for underprivileged children.

The next CEU Senate election begins tomorrow, Jan. 16. Charged with making recommendations concerning all matters of general university interest, the Senate consists of the president and rector; the provost/academic pro-rector; and representatives of the faculty, staff, and students. Voting eligibility criteria are detailed in the attached document. The list of academic and administrative staff members who are eligible to vote was sent to unit coordinators on Dec. 13, 2012.
