Two CEU academics convened a side event on the subject of incitement in international law at the 2013 Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Human Dimension Implementation Meeting held in Warsaw on Sept. 24. CEU’s Sejal Parmar, assistant professor in the Department of Legal Studies, and Peter Molnar, research fellow in the Center for Media and Communication Studies, organized a panel discussion moderated by Andrei Rikhter, director of the Office of the OSCE Special Representative on Freedom of the Media.

CEU Business School co-hosted the Second Entrepreneurship Summit Sept. 26 with the American Chamber of Commerce in Hungary, the U.S. Embassy, Budapest Business School, and the Hungarian Private Equity and Venture Capital Association. Keynote speaker Robin Chase, founder of Zipcar, spoke about lessons learned on the road to building the world’s largest car-sharing company. She also shared her insights the following day in a private session with CEU Business School students, urging them to run companies as “learning companies” that swiftly recognize and rectify problems.

Over 200 people attended the annual Autumn Sports Day, held on Oct. 5 at the CEU Residence Center and organized by the Student Life Office, the CEU Residence Center, and the Sports Center, with the support of the Alumni Relations and Career Services Office. Participants competed in soccer, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, and chess tournaments. Some were brave enough to try the arm wrestling and the donut-eating contests. Others enjoyed water aerobics and the beautiful weather.

CEU and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences co-hosted the 2013 Strategic Leaders Global Summit on Graduate Education, a U.S. Council of Graduate Schools event Sept. 30 - Oct. 2 that brought delegates from 14 countries on five continents to talk about the use of technology in higher education. Co-chaired by CEU Senior Vice-President Liviu Matei and CGS President Debra Stewart, summit delegates urged faculty and administrators to become active agents in taking advantage of the opportunities as well as facing the challenges of new technologies in graduate education.

The Center for Ethics and Biomedicine (CELAB) received a grant enabling it to initiate work this month on a new FP7 research project, "Cell-based regenerative medicine: new challenges for EU legislation and governance.” Total funding of all partners by the Commission is €500,000. Judit Sandor, professor in the departments of Political Science, Legal Studies, and Gender Studies, will lead the portion of the project that concerns stem cell sources and procurement.

CEU administrative employees are eligible to apply for Erasmus funding for training at a partner institution or participation in conferences or workshops. The deadline for this second application cycle is Oct. 31. The duration of the exchange must be five working days. Shorter stays are allowed in the case of conferences, seminars, and workshops. This conference, scheduled for April 25-27, 2014, at Sabanci University in Istanbul, seeks to explore the ways in which people’s memories of 20th-century wars, genocides, and other forms of political violence are influenced by gender. The conference is open to young researchers from all disciplines and backgrounds. Students working on their MA or PhD thesis, recent graduates, and young independent researchers are encouraged to apply.

CEU Press’ latest book is a comparative study of grassroots religious-based opposition activity in Slovakia and East Germany prior to 1989. Author David Doellinger, professor of history at Western Oregon University, examines the divergent grassroots activism of the secret Catholic Church in Slovakia and the Lutheran Church in East Germany that confronted state socialist rule and contributed to its eventual dismantling.

The article "War Rape: (Re)defining Motherhood, Fatherhood, and Nationhood," authored by Yana Hashamova of Ohio State University and published in CEU Press’ “Embracing Arms: Cultural Representation of Slavic and Balkan Women in War,” has been awarded the Association of Women in Slavic Studies 2013 Heldt Prize for Best Article in Slavic/Eastern European/Eurasian Women's Studies.
