CEU hosted its first Sustainability Festival on Sept. 19, linking members of the community with local environmental groups. Over 100 visitors interacted with the organizations, which presented their specific contributions to building more environmentally and socially conscious communities in Hungary. For new arrivals, the festival provided an opportunity to learn about how and where they can contribute to building a greener Budapest during their time here. Samples of locally grown food were served and entertainment was provided by singer Nia Gaal.

As in previous years, CEU participated in Hungary’s Cultural Heritage Days, held this year on Sept. 21-22 with the theme “Houses of Water.” More than 100 people visited CEU during the two-day event.

Anna Christidou, a postdoctoral research fellow with CEU’s Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies, died on Sept. 15 in a car accident in Athens that also killed her father. She is survived by her husband, Jan Hanos. Christidou joined CEU in September 2011 shortly after defending her dissertation on “Unknown Byzantine Art in the Balkan Area: Art, Power and Patronage in 12th- to 14th-Century Churches in Albania” at the Courtauld Institute of Art/University of London, which won her one of five 20th anniversary research fellowships at CEU.

The Academic Cooperation and Research Support Office has been invited to join a new network, BESTPRAC, whose purpose is to improve the administration of transnational research projects by linking administrators and thereby supporting excellence in research. ACRO was invited to join the network by the European Association of Research Managers and Administrators. The network, which will launch in October, is to be financed by COST, an intergovernmental framework for European Cooperation in Science and Technology.

Dorit Geva, assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, wrote this book in the comparative politics series published by Cambridge University Press. Her study shows how the French and U.S. conscription systems in the early 20th century were shaped to a great extent by concerns about men’s positions as breadwinners and paternal authority.

Agoston Berecz, a second-year doctoral student in the Department of History, recently published his first book, “The Politics of Early Language Teaching: Hungarian in the Primary Schools of the Late Dual Monarchy.” It’s the first volume of Pasts, Inc. Studies and Working Papers, a new publishing initiative of Pasts, Inc. Center for Historical Studies. The series is edited by Constantin Iordachi and Balazs Trencsenyi, associate professors in the department and co-heads of CEU’s Pasts, Inc.

Yancy Cottrill returned to his native United States recently after working in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, for Anderson & Anderson, an American firm that focuses on international business—Cottrill’s specialization at CEU. In Mongolia, Cottrill helped establish the country’s first credit-rating bureau by drafting the joint-venture agreement, company charter, and accompanying documents.

Following a spring expansion of the CEU recycling program, collection totals have been monitored closely to track the amount of waste CEU diverts from landfills. In June, July and August, 110 kg of plastic waste, 490 kg of cardboard packaging, 1,280 kg of mixed office paper, and 760 kg of glass were collected, for a total of over 2,600 kg, or 30,000 liters of selected waste in the three-month period.
