CEU Provost and Pro-Rector Liviu Matei assessed the current state of the Bologna Process and its future in a report for the Ministerial Conference of the European Higher Education Area on May 15 in Yerevan, Armenia. Matei, who is also a professor in the Department of Public Policy, presented the findings of his report, which served as a key background document in preparation for the conference.

CEU is again taking part in the Allianz Summer Academy (ASA). The theme this year is Europe at a Turning Point: Economic Crisis, Social Disintegration, Political Change. Teams from five universities are preparing reports on topics related to this theme that will be presented and discussed during the first days of the Summer Academy at the Allianz Management Institute (Kempfenhausen).

On April 21-22, CEU students participated in the workshop “Budgeting for Human Rights: Why Government Budgets are Important for Realizing Human Rights,” organized by the Human RightS Initiative (HRSI) in collaboration with the School of Public Policy (SPP) at CEU. Participants included Roxana Damian (MPA ’15) from SPP and Edi Sara (MA ’15) from the Department of Public Policy.

CEU earned the best rankings in its history in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) subject ranking, published April 29. CEU's programs related to politics and international studies jumped to 29th in the world, and 7th in Europe.

The current government is the most capable Ukraine has ever had, and the readiest to reform, said CEU Adjunct Professor Kalman Mizsei, who heads the European Union Advisory Mission on Civilian Security Sector Reform in Ukraine. His March 23 lecture at CEU was organized as part of the Frontiers of Democracy series by the Department of Public Policy.

Andrew Cartwright, research fellow at the Center for Policy Studies (CPS), has been appointed co-director of the center. He will work alongside existing director Violetta Zentai to expand CPS' involvement in comparative and interdisciplinary policy research, strengthening teaching connections across departments as well as continuing to provide practical research opportunities for doctoral students.

Fourteen CEU students and faculty had the opportunity to join representatives of five other Hungarian universities and attend an informal meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel during her visit to Budapest on Feb. 5. The event was hosted by Andrassy University Budapest.

When Uwe Puetter, professor in the Department of Public Policy and director of the Center for European Union Research, started to work on his research into the changing role of the European Council and the Council of the European Union (or the Council in short) in 2007-08, he was met with skepticism. It took the Euro crisis to convince skeptics of the relevancy of the European Council.
