CEU supports the initiative of the League of European Research Universities (LERU) calling upon all universities, research institutes, research funders and individual researchers to sign and promote their petition to the European Commission saying that research funding should go to research, not to publishers. The petition calls on the Dutch EU Presidency to prevent publishers from being paid twice for the same content: first, by selling costly subscriptions; second, by charging for making articles available in Golden Open Access.
The Human RightS Initiative at CEU hosted Shoebox Full of Love Donation Drive from November 17 to December 7. Members of the CEU community donated 41 Christmas presents for children in need. The presents were placed in shoeboxes and wrapped in festive wrapping paper, with a sign indicating how old children the presents were for. HRSI delivered to to the representatives of the Pesterzsebet Roma Minority Self-Government who will distribute them to the children before the holidays.

While meeting the needs of women and ensuring their safety pose challenges both logistical and cultural, women can be key participants in change, according to panelists at “Women and the Refugee Crisis: On the Move, On the Ground, Making Change” held at CEU Dec. 3 and hosted by the Department of Gender Studies.

In the last two years CEU completed major upgrades in its online conferencing software capabilities on campus, and will further expand the number of rooms with online conferencing capabilities during the campus redevelopment. The implementation of multiple smart conferencing rooms in collaboration with mobile equipment that can be used in almost any location on campus has made online conferencing, teaching and communication more convenient and effective than ever before.
In Defining Heresy, CEU alumna Irene Bueno (MEDS Phd ‘03) investigates the theories and practices of anti-heretical repression in the first half of the fourteenth century, focusing on the figure of Jacques Fournier/Benedict XII (c.1284-1342). Throughout his career as a bishop-inquisitor in Languedoc, theologian, and, eventually, pope at Avignon, Fournier made a multi-faceted contribution to the fight against religious dissent.
