What effect does open science have on academic competition? Who really pays for open access to the scholarly literature? What ethical considerations are there to open data sharing? These were just some of the questions debated at a November 22 conference held at CEU on the challenges and opportunities of open science.

Since 2012, CEU has been an active partner for higher education reform in Myanmar. As part of its efforts, CEU, with assistance and funding from the Open Society Foundation (OSF), has invited more than 50 researchers and faculty from Myanmar to the university for fellowships. This fall, for the first time, CEU is expanding its hosting activities to include the first Myanmar Librarian Fellows.

You could be forgiven for passing the group of teens in downtown Bacsalmas, a small town in southern Hungary one afternoon last April without a second look. Earbuds in, eyes on their phones and tablets, the scene seemed quite ordinary. However, something more taking place. The teens were participating in an iWalk, an educational program that connects physical locations to Holocaust-related events using survivor and witness video testimonies.

The CEU Board of Trustees were treated to a special screening of documentary films by CEU students on June 24. The "Best of the Mirabaud Media Lab" event was a highlight in an intense weekend and an opportunity to engage directly with students and a new initiative at CEU.

Something novel has been happening at CEU this year. Students of social anthropology, business, history, nationalism, public policy, and other disciplines have been turning into filmmakers. As part of their discipline-specific studies, students are attending new documentary filmmaking courses held in the CEU Library’s Mirabaud Media Lab.

The CEU Library donated thousands of books from its collection to more than 20 Hungarian institutions before it moved into its new premises in October 2016. In the two years leading up to the big move, library staff did the first-ever inventory of CEU’s entire collection and conducted a systematic review of holdings in order to deselect books, multimedia items, and short runs of journal back-files that were no longer needed for a variety of reasons.

This January and February, twelve students from such diverse countries as Cameroon, Yemen, and Iran gathered together at CEU Library’s Mirabaud Media Lab to receive training on using film to share their personal stories. The attendees were participants in CEU’s OLIve Weekend Program, an initiative providing free weekend courses to registered refugees and asylum seekers in Hungary.
