Julius Horvath, professor and head of the Department of Economics, has been named acting dean of CEU Business School, while Julia Buxton, associate dean for academic affairs and programs as well as professor of comparative politics at the School of Public Policy (SPP), has been named acting dean of SPP. Both appointments, made by CEU President and Rector John Shattuck, begin August 1 for a period of one year.

Hosted by CEU's Student Union in the CEU Residence Center, this year's Intercultural Festival welcomed representatives of 25 countries and 20 languages on January 23. Students, dressed in 18 different national costumes, performed their traditional songs and dances on stage. 40 traditional dishes were served on 22 tables. Members of the Student Union spent 50+ hours preparing for activities for participants of the Intercultural Festival to enjoy.

After the entry of the Red Army into Czechoslovak territory in 1945, Red Army authorities began to arrest and deport Czechoslovak citizens to labor camps in the Soviet Union. The regions most affected were Eastern and South Slovakia and Prague. The Czechoslovak authorities repeatedly requested a halt to the deportations and that the deported Czechoslovaks be returned immediately. It took a long time before these protests generated any response.

With Their Backs to the Mountains by Paul Robert Magocsi, professor of history and political science, chair of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Toronto, is the history of a stateless people, the Carpatho-Rusyns, and their historic homeland, Carpathian Rus’, located in the heart of central Europe. A little over 100,000 Carpatho-Rusyns are registered in official censuses but their number could be as high as 1,000,000, the greater part living in Ukraine and Slovakia. The majority of the diaspora—nearly 600,000—lives in the US.

The sixth Budapest CEU Conference on Cognitive Development (BCCCD), held Jan. 7-9, attracted more than 305 participants, including representatives of cognitive science, young researchers and doctoral students from Europe, North America and Japan. Organized annually by the Cognitive Development Center at CEU, the conference presented recent research findings on early social cognition, memory, reasoning, word learning and moral cognition. Speakers included Alan M. Leslie of Rutgers University and Nathan J. Emery of Queen Mary University of London.
