CEU now ranks in the 101-150 spot worldwide in political science and in the 151-200 spot in economics, according to Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2017. This year, institutions are ranked in 52 subjects across natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences. To be included in a subject ranking, universities need to have a minimum number of research publications during the period of 2011-2015. The publication threshold is different for different subjects.

The Ambedkar English Tutoring program was initiated by Head of CEU's Department of Mathematics and Its Applications Karoly Boroczky when he, together with a group of CEU math students, visited the Ambedkar School near Miskolc, Hungary in April 2016. Ambedkar is what one of Ambedkar is what one of teachers there calls a "second-chance high school." The students are from the marginalized Roma population and are often segregated in public schools.

With a €50,000 grant from the Google DNI Fund, CEU's Center for Media, Data and Society (CMDS) will develop a visualization tool for tracking and analyzing media ownership in Hungary according to political ties, ideology and interest groups. The free-to-use, publicly available tool will be designed for research and policy making purposes, but also for journalists and others interested in learning more about media ownership with the help of a user-friendly program.

In preparation for the "ERA Mobility and Career Day" event slated for November 2017, the CEU Career Services Office hosted a preparatory event, entitled Careers in Research on May 23.The presentations on EURAXESS services and RESAVER were followed by an informal meet-up with CEU alumni currently working in research in Europe, returning to CEU to talk to students and young researchers about their experience, successes and challenges on the research job market, and to share their advice.

As the first administrative unit of CEU to attract EU funds to the University, the Career Services Office participates in the project “ERA Mobility and Career Day”, funded by Horizon 2020. The initiative aims to promote the EURAXESS network, an initiative of the European Union and its member states, aiming at supporting mobility and career development and enhancing international collaboration within the European Research Area (ERA).

The CEU Board of Trustees were treated to a special screening of documentary films by CEU students on June 24. The "Best of the Mirabaud Media Lab" event was a highlight in an intense weekend and an opportunity to engage directly with students and a new initiative at CEU.

Each year, the U.S. Department of State honors individuals around the world who have devoted their lives to the fight against human trafficking. This year, Hungarian sociologist, human rights activist and former CEU researcher Viktoria Sebhelyi was named one of the Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report Heroes, receiving the Hero Acting to End Modern Slavery Award.

Following an administration streamlining process endorsed by the Board of Trustees, one of CEU’s administrative entities (Central-European University LLc.; managing CEU Press and Dormitory) has been merged into another separate CEU legal entity (Kis-Buda Center Nonprofit Kft.) as of June 30, 2017. From that day the Central-European University LLc. ceased to exist and its general successor is the Kis-Buda Center Nonprofit Kft. Units directly affected by the merge have been informed separately in detail.
