New ID cards have been issued for all members of the CEU community. The cards can be picked up from the Campus Services Group at Nador 11 Courtyard daily from 9 am – 4 pm. Old ID cards will still work for printing but will be decommissioned on October 31, 2016.

Since 2010, CEU has been celebrating Earth Day in a variety of ways from hosting sustainability fairs to planting a friendship tree in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy and CEU's home district mayor. This year, nearly 20 volunteers gathered in CEU's Japanese Garden to give the area a good spring clean by weeding, repotting and planting new seedlings and young plants for the Edible Garden.

As part of CEU's weeklong celebration of Earth Day 2015, students and administrators created a community garden at the CEU Residence Center. At the April 23 event, members of the CEU community planted herbs, edible plants and flowers in the green space behind the dorm, located in Budapest's 10th district. Coriander, chive, rosemary, basil, strawberry, corn salad, rocket, thyme, lemon balm, chili peppers, seeds of sunflower, dill, roses, sunflowers, and hibiscus were available for students to plant.

Kicking off a week of celebration and activism in honor of Earth Day, CEU Provost and Pro-Rector Liviu Matei joined U.S. Ambassador Colleen Bell and 5th district Mayor Peter Szentgyorgyvolgyi to plant a "Tree of Friendship" in Szabadsag ter (Freedom Square). After the white magnolia tree was planted, CEU student volunteers helped prepare the park for spring by planting dozens of small bushes and plants.

Many community members are already using the bike-parking area located on the ground floor of Oktober 6 utca 7. To aid bike commuters, Sustainable CEU has installed a bike pump in the bike-parking area that is compatible with most types of air valves. U.S. Ambassador to Hungary Colleen Bell opened a climate change event at CEU Feb. 2, introducing Andrew Gillespie of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Gillespie said science backs up the fact that humans have adversely affected the climate and that the changes are happening at a rapid and alarming pace.

In line with CEU's strategic sustainability goals, the U.S. Department of State's Regional Environmental, Science & Technology, and Health (ESTH) Hub for Central and Eastern Europe has partnered with the University to provide a $30,000 grant to support a Sustainable University Network (SUN) of student environmental groups in Hungary. SUN will promote civic responsibility among future decision-makers in Hungary by developing leadership skills, promoting sustainable development training, and reinforcing a shared commitment to environmental stewardship.
