This October, the Semester Restaurant on the ground floor of Nador 9 served 1,100 kilos of meat, 600 kilos of potatoes, 900 kilos of other fresh vegetables, 600 kilos of fresh fruit, and 120 kilos of bread. Open for breakfast and lunch, the restaurant feeds some 400 people every weekday.

Open Society Archives presents the 9th Verzio International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival from Nov. 6 through 11. The films address topics including Ukrainian child laborers, Swedish transsexuals, Chilean political prisoners, Italian homeless, Russian anarchist artists, Zambian polygamists, and Hungarian prisoners. The festival also features meetings with filmmakers and producers, roundtable discussions and late-night concerts.

OSA will hold a workshop on Nov. 5 to exchange knowledge in the field of digitizing cultural heritage collections in non-state institutions in Central Europe. The workshop will showcase two of OSA’s EU-supported Best Practices Network projects. One is the HOPE project, which brings together European social history institutions aiming to improve access to the vast and growing amount of significant but scattered digital collections on social history.

In November, CEU Press will publish “Saints of the Christianization Age of Central Europe (Tenth-Eleventh Centuries),” edited by Gabor Klaniczay, university professor of medieval studies at CEU. This sixth volume in the Central European Medieval Texts series reveals the Christianization of Bohemia, Poland, Hungary, and Dalmatia through stories of people who were instrumental in the process and went on to achieve sainthood.

The most recent release from CEU Press is “Teaching ‘Race’ with a Gendered Edge,” edited by Brigitte Hipfl and Kristin Lofdottir. This collection of essays—part of the series “Teaching With Gender: European Women’s Studies in International and Interdisciplinary Classrooms”—approaches questions of race and racism from a feminist perspective, focusing on the intersections of race, class, and gender. The series is published jointly with ATGENDER, the European Association for Gender Research, Education and Documentation.

Applications for the European Research Council’s Advanced Grant are due Nov. 22. There will be no call for the Advanced Grant published in 2013. Due to the size and scale of these grants, proper institutional preparation is essential.
