The Student Life Office, CEU's counseling professionals, the Alumni Office, and the Student Union are hosting the first-ever DeStress Week for the CEU community, now through Nov. 30. Events include an exam survival kit for students, a stress-free zone in the Octagon, and a stress management workshop, as well as a wine-tasting evening, a poetry night, and other opportunities to acquire de-stressing skills for the future. The Communications Office has revamped the CEU institutional Facebook page and has begun posting news items, photos, and videos from across the University to boost CEU’s engagement with audiences worldwide. The Student Recruitment Office continues to post items about its recruiting events and other topics. Interested parties can join the 8,000 people who already “Like” the page at https://www.facebook.com/ceuhungary. CEU’s School of Public Policy also launched a Facebook page recently as part of its outreach efforts.

The annual CEU Open House for prospective students on Nov. 16 drew the largest number of attendees ever, with over 220 participants from 20 countries. Organized by the Student Recruitment Office, the event included current students, faculty, and staff, and provided participants with an opportunity to visit classes, meet with representatives of academic departments, hear from current students about their experience, and attend workshops on how to write successful statements of purpose and research proposals.

CEU’s Academic Senate has approved the calendar for the next Senate elections and appointed the Nominating and Vote-Counting Committee, with Marie-Pierre Granger as chair, and Emel Akcali and Gabriella Beni as committee members. The election cycle starts on Nov. 30, 2012, with the voting period from Jan. 16-22, 2013, and the announcement of results on Jan. 23, 2013. For more information, see https://www.ceu.hu/node/33096.

Karoly Boroczky has been appointed head of the Department of Mathematics and Its Applications, effective Nov. 1, for a two-year term. Boroczky comes from the Alfred Renyi Institute of Mathematics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, where he served as a senior research fellow and full professor. He was also an associate professor at Eotvos Lorand University, Budapest.

Karoly Jokay, visiting professor in the Department of Public Policy, has been named executive director of the Fulbright Commission, which was established 20 years ago by the U.S. Department of State and the Hungarian Ministry of Education to promote educational exchange between the U.S. and Hungary. Alongside his new responsibilities, Jokay will continue teaching courses in public budgeting and public management at CEU. For more information, see https://www.ceu.hu/node/32896.

Members of the CEU community can help homeless Budapest citizens stay warm this winter by donating blankets or clothing. CEU’s Human RightS Initiative (HRSI), which is leading the drive, asks donors to deliver new or used blankets that are clean and in good condition to the CEU Laptop Area at Nador utca 9 and place them in a box under the Human RightS Initiative bulletin board by Nov. 30. The blankets will be distributed by several NGOs working with A Varos Mindenkie (The City is for All) on the evening of Dec. 1.

CEU’s Human RightS Initiative (HRSI) seeks team members for its biggest annual campaign, “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence,” which runs from Nov. 25 through Dec. 10. This year's theme is "From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Let’s Challenge Militarism and End Violence Against Women!" The Department of History seeks papers that examine theories of vision and ways of seeing in different historical periods for a conference titled “Current Theoretical Interfaces: Iconicity, Semiotics, Historicity,” to be held at CEU in May 2013. Papers are due Dec. 15. The conference is a joint project with CEU’s Department of Medieval Studies, Pasts Inc., the Open Society Archives, and the Institute of Advanced Study.
