CEU will host the “Transnational Women’s Literature in Europe” conference in May 2013 in cooperation with FP7 Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship and Akademie Schloss Solitude. The conference will investigate theoretical questions related to the idea of transnational literature, focusing in particular (but not exclusively) on narratives of (re)location, transition, and mutability that appear in the literature produced by women writers. Papers on individual authors, as well as comparative and theoretical studies, are welcome. The deadline for abstracts is Jan. 15, 2013.

The Center for Policy Studies will host the International Sociological Association's annual RC19 (Poverty, Social Welfare and Social Policy) conference on Aug. 22-24, 2013. The RC 19 conference will bring together scholars of comparative welfare state and social policy studies who represent a range of disciplines including sociology, social policy, political science, and policy studies. Conference organizers invite papers that investigate the main social categories/mechanisms by which inequalities are constituted, legitimized, questioned, and tackled in diverse societies.

The Humanities Initiative Fellowship at the CEU Institute for Advanced Study is a joint research/teaching program in which junior fellows are expected to spend the academic year in Budapest working on their own research project for two semesters and teaching four credits’ worth of courses at CEU for one semester. CEU has announced the call for nominations for its second annual European Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Social Sciences and Humanities. The award, launched in 2011, is the first and only such pan-European honor. To be eligible, a candidate must be an instructor of any rank in the social sciences and/or humanities, currently teaching at a higher education institution in a member country of the European Higher Education Area (http://www.ehea.info/members.aspx). Current and former faculty members of CEU are not eligible.

Between Sept. 1 and Dec. 15, CEU will have hosted 271 events that were open to the public: 103 lectures, 94 seminar/workshops/roundtables/panel discussions, 19 conferences, 3 book launches, 21 defenses, and 14 concerts, films, exhibitions, and theater performances. CEU’s Open Society Archives will have held 17 events, including exhibitions, roundtable discussions, film screenings, and a charity auction.

The Student Life Office, CEU's counseling professionals, the Alumni Office, and the Student Union are hosting the first-ever DeStress Week for the CEU community, now through Nov. 30. Events include an exam survival kit for students, a stress-free zone in the Octagon, and a stress management workshop, as well as a wine-tasting evening, a poetry night, and other opportunities to acquire de-stressing skills for the future. The Communications Office has revamped the CEU institutional Facebook page and has begun posting news items, photos, and videos from across the University to boost CEU’s engagement with audiences worldwide. The Student Recruitment Office continues to post items about its recruiting events and other topics. Interested parties can join the 8,000 people who already “Like” the page at https://www.facebook.com/ceuhungary. CEU’s School of Public Policy also launched a Facebook page recently as part of its outreach efforts.
