CEU’s Sustainability Advisory Committee (CSAC) reconvened activity and welcomed new members who will continue to strategize on ways to improve the University’s sustainability profile while engaging the community. New members include: Richard Fisk (Chairman), Henriett Griecs-Kaman (Department of Public Policy), Zlata Kharitonova (HRSI), Colleen Sharkey (Communications Office), Jens Trummer (Open Society Institute), and Gyorgy Vida (Facilities Services).

The annual CEU Picnic and Sports Day, the University’s biggest community-building event, drew more than 600 adults and children to the SOTE Sports Center on June 9. Competitions included football, volleyball, running, and badminton. The culmination of the day was the Exhibition Football Cup: students vs. faculty/staff/alumni, which ended in victory for the students. Participants enjoyed games and performances, including zumba, yoga, American football, jumprope, bicycling, unicycling, rollerblading, wall-climbing, rodeo bull-riding, and much more.

The CEU Debate Society, with its counterparts at Corvinus University and ELTE, is hosting the GDDPC Open, a new international debate tournament, on June 22-23. The event is supported by Open Society Foundations and held at CEU. Organizers expect at least 32 teams from some 20 countries to take part in the rounds, on motions from fields such as international relations, political science, gender studies, and philosophy.

The Student Recruitment Office and the Center for Media and Communication Studies hosted 20 students and staff members from Georgia State University in the US in May. Recruitment staff informed them about study and scholarship options at CEU and conducted an extended campus tour, including a visit to the library. On June 3, the Student Recruitment Office welcomed students attending the CEU Summer University program.

The Center for Integrity in Business and Government (CIBG) plans a two-day workshop for top managers on business integrity, transparency, and compliance in Almaty, Kazakhstan on June 27-28. The workshop is part of the CIBG project on integrity education supported by a grant from the Siemens Integrity Initiative. The project aims to assess current corporate efforts related to the issues of integrity and business ethics and consider prospects for the promotion of integrity and collective action in the Central and Eastern European region and the former Soviet Union through education.

SPP and LEAD Mercator Capacity Building Center for Leadership and Advocacy have started a collaboration that will culminate in the development and delivery of a joint Skills for Impact (SFI) curriculum. Mandatory throughout the duration of SPP’s flagship Master of Public Administration (MPA) program, the SFI curriculum will offer a variety of intensive courses introducing students to vital public policy and administration skills, such as leadership, negotiation, public speaking and communication, budgeting and fundraising, and project management.

In order to deepen public policy expertise in the field of human rights and governance, the Open Society Foundations and CEU’s School of Public Policy created a new internship program. Beginning later this year, the Open Society Internship for Rights and Governance will support 14 students from top graduate-level programs to work on the intersection of public policy, advocacy, and human rights.
