The Center for Policy Studies will take part in the CONFRONT Research Project, which aims to strengthen counter-trafficking efforts targeting Roma children as vulnerable group. CONFRONT will focus on three new forms of trafficking affecting children in Roma communities: child begging, labor exploitation for pickpocketing, and sexual exploitation of boys. Activities will take place in seven EU member states.

Balint Menyhert and Calin Demian, both fourth-year doctoral students in the Department of Economics, were selected to receive the Olga Radzyner Award. Menyhert was recognized for his paper, "Economic Growth Spurred by Diversity: Central Europe at the Turn of the 20th Century," and Demian for the paper, "The European Union and the Gains from Trade." The Olga Radzyner Award is bestowed on young economists from Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe in recognition of scientific work on European economic integration.

Professor Laszlo Csaba of the Department of International Relations and European Studies has been elected to the prestigious Academia Europaea, a European non-governmental association of leading experts in natural sciences and the humanities. Members are scientists and scholars who collectively aim to promote learning, education, and research.

Gyorgy Gergely, professor in the Department of Cognitive Science, was awarded the prestigious title of “egyetemi tanar” on Sept. 1, 2013, by Hungarian Minister of Human Resources Zoltan Balog. The title, which literally means “university professor,” indicates a high ranking within Hungarian higher education. To qualify for accreditation in Hungary, doctoral schools must have a certain number of such professors. For this reason, the promotion of a CEU faculty member to this rank is an important step in increasing CEU’s integration into the Hungarian higher education system.

Richard Fisk, events manager in the External Relations Office, has been promoted to Director of Events, effective Oct. 7. He has been a key member of the events team since 2010. Fisk spearheaded the research, assessment, and implementation of Event Pro, an event management database system, which is also an important University resource for data mining, enabling information about space allocation and usage to be much more easily and accurately tracked.

The cafe on the10th floor of Faculty Tower, formerly known as Dzsem, has changed its name to Top10 Campus Cafe to reflect its location and make it easier for non-Hungarians to pronounce. It is still owned and operated by Katalin Nagy and Gabriella Bartyik, who also own the Dzsem cafe at Vigyazo Ferenc utca 7. Top10 is a colorful, friendly spot for breakfast, lunch, a snack or a chat with friends or professors over coffee or tea.

It serves as a resource for those seeking information about CEU's economic role, support of Hungarian students, local alumni numbers and activities, facilities open to the public, academic and research partnerships with Hungarian institutions, summer programs open to Hungarians, outreach and civic engagement with the Hungarian community, and role in revitalizing the historic downtown neighborhoods.

CEU Sustainable Campus Initiative and the Human RightS Initiative (HRSI) collaborated to host a series of events marking World Food Day 2013 with the theme, “Healthy People Depend on Healthy Food Systems.” The events were intended to introduce the environmental, social, and economic realities of food systems to the CEU community.

The Department of Political Science hosted a project aimed at measuring populism among chief executives in Central and Eastern Europe, the Baltic states and former Soviet republics. The project was led by Kirk Hawkins, associate professor of political science at Brigham Young University and Robert Sata of CEU. 56 CEU masters and doctoral students from eight departments were trained on how to measure populism in a three-day workshop before analyzing political speeches in local languages and coding them into English.
