Miklos Haraszti, visiting professor in the Department of Public Policy and United Nations special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Belarus, visited Vilnius, Lithuania, Feb. 2-5 to hold consultations with representatives of Belarusian civil society on the human rights situation in the country.

The CEU Senate approved the Student Disability Policy, which aims to ensure that the legal rights of students with disabilities are recognized and protected. It establishes the principles and procedures through which students with disabilities are recognized and assisted at CEU, outlining support mechanisms and processes to ensure that students with disabilities enjoy the same educational opportunities as their fellow CEU students.

CEU Business School is the first institution throughout Central and Eastern Europe to receive a grant from the NASDAQ OMX Educational Foundation. The three-year grant will annually fund three MBA or Master's of Finance students who hail from countries with emerging economies. Center for Policy Studies (CPS) Research Fellows Violetta Zentai and Vera Messing are participants in the European Commission-funded ASSESS Research Project (Assessing Integration Measures for Vulnerable Migrant Groups), which monitors and assesses the effectiveness of integration measures for three vulnerable migrant groups – women, children and victims of trafficking. The assessment aims to identify the strengths and weaknesses in the application of the Common Basic Principles on Migrant Integration when it comes to the integration of vulnerable migrant groups.

CEU Summer University invites innovative, research-based and/or policy-oriented course proposals from faculty members at CEU or elsewhere for summer 2015. SUN courses are usually taught by a team of five to seven faculty members representing a wide range of geographical, disciplinary, and institutional backgrounds. The target audience is master’s and PhD students, junior faculty and researchers, and professionals. The program aims to help strengthen CEU’s research capacity and academic network-building efforts.

The “International Academic Network on Bioethics” (IANB), the longest of several international projects at the Center for Ethics and Law in Biomedicine (CELAB), conducts annual workshops between legal experts and physicians, philosophers and sociologists from 17 countries. Three books have been published in English and French recently as a result of previous workshops. Two books are related to the workshop on the ethics of end-of-life treatment decisions: “Les proches et la fin de vie médicalisé” and “Families and End-of-Life Treatment Decisions: International Perspective”.

Edited by Constantin Iordachi, associate professor of comparative history at CEU, and Arnd Bauerkaemper, professor of history at Freie Universitaet in Berlin, this book explores the interrelated campaigns of agricultural collectivization in the Soviet Union and in the communist dictatorships established in Soviet-dominated Eastern Europe. Despite the profound, long-term societal impact of collectivization, the subject has remained relatively underresearched.
