This year’s Alumni Reunion Weekend was the biggest and best yet, reported the organizing Alumni Relations and Career Services Office. On May 10, more than 320 alumni and friends enjoyed CEU’s most highly-attended Alumni Reunion Gala at Kempinski Hotel Corvinus, Budapest. The Alumni Leadership Forum attracted over two dozen alumni leaders and volunteers from around the world. CEU also hosted a Reunion Campus Tour, and, for the first time, a re:discover Budapest historical tour, both of which events were very popular with alumni.

The School of Public Policy and the Peterson Institute for International Economics co-hosted a two-day symposium of political leaders, policymakers and scholars on May 6-7 to assess lessons learned and the road ahead 25 years after the fall of communism. The "Transition in Perspective" conference drew an extraordinary group of practitioners and specialists from Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Hungary and many other former communist countries.

In 2015 CEU Business School and the CEU Department of Economics, in cooperation with IBM, will launch a new one-year Master’s of Science Program in Business Analytics. This program draws on knowledge from economics, management, statistics and technology, which provides the bases for new skills and competencies. The result of such new capabilities is an ability to create value from data analysis, especially Big Data, in a business environment.

CEU's Department of International Relations and European Studies (IRES) celebrated its 20th anniversary by examining issues that affect the European “neighborhood” and issues of international security and global economy. Faculty, staff, and department alumni attended the May 9 conference in advance of CEU's Alumni Weekend. The IRES@20 conference allowed attending alumni the opportunity to see how their department and discipline has grown.

CEU has been granted accreditation by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) with observer status to the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) and its subsidiary bodies. Accreditation is the main entry point for major groups and stakeholders into policy dialogue at UNEP and provides an additional avenue for participation in UNEP's policy development work in line with the expert work undertaken up to now by CEU's Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy.

Thomas Skouteris joins the School of Public Policy as Associate Professor in the in the Fall 2014. Skouteris brings to the School a diverse range of legal knowledge from the theory and history of international law, to lawmaking and international criminal justice and will begin teaching at SPP. Previously, he was Associate Professor and Chair at the Law Department of the American University in Cairo. Before Cairo, Skouteris taught for eight years at Leiden University as Assistant Professor and Academic Coordinator of the Advanced LLM Degree in Public International Law.

CEU’s Human RightS Initiative (HRSI) is accepting applicants for a one-day intensive workshop at CEU on the theme of media and human rights on Saturday, June 7 that aims to provide participating students with a working knowledge of videographic methods that can be used in documenting and promoting human rights.

This year’s Spring Ball, with a Havana Nights theme, attracted over 1,000 people. Organized by the Student Union and Student Life Office on May 10, the Ball broke all records so far. Guests boarded the Europa Boat, which cruised the Danube offering spectacular views of the city from its panorama decks. Many people danced to the sounds of the Coolminers band and the live DJ, while others played poker and roulette in the lounge. The program finished with the dancers of the Tropical Show Cuba, and the ensuing party lasted until 5 a.m.

It’s time for the CEU community and friends to gather at the 5th Annual CEU Picnic on May 24 at the SOTE Sports Center. The Student Life Office guarantees that everyone will find something fun to do. There will be sport competitions, as well as lots of new activities, such as archery, mini golf, fishing simulator, rowing, Zumba, a health tent with medical check-ups, and more. Those who do not wish to compete can relax, have a massage, drink a healthy juice, enjoy the sun, and cheer their friends and fellow students to victory in the games.

On May 13, the Polish Institute in Budapest, located on the corner of Andrassy Avenue and Nagymezo utca, placed a large commemorative yellow star in its window display. The building was a yellow-star house in 1944. As one of OSA's partner institutions, the Polish Institute is participating in the June 21 commemorations, which mark the 70th anniversary of the forced relocation of 220,000 Budapest residents defined as Jewish by the race laws in force at the time, into almost 2,000 "yellow-star houses" across the city.
