Gabor Klaniczay, university professor in CEU’s Department of Medieval Studies was elected, as a recognition of his achievements in Medieval Studies, a Foreign Corresponding Member (membre correspondant étranger) of the Academie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres, seated in Paris, in May.

Published by Helena History Press, distributed by CEU Press, this volume of translations represents the entire dramatic and cinematic ouevre of Danilo Kis (1935, Subotica, Yugoslavia – 1989, Paris), cult figure among circles disturbed by the emerging nationalisms of the late 20th century. The themes of these seven dramas and screenplays range from the Holocaust to the first decades of communism in Yugoslavia and Hungary.

70 years ago, two consecutive Budapest mayoral decrees, each with a carefully compiled list of houses, changed the map of Budapest and the lives of the people who live here for ever. 220,000 Budapest citizens defined as Jewish and obliged to wear the yellow star by law were given just a few days to move into one of almost 2,000 compulsory places of residence designated by the decrees, each of which was also marked with a yellow Star of David: the yellow-star houses.

While it might seem far-fetched to some, it is the concept driving Wymeria, the new venture proposed by Jamie White, Rebecca Joyner and Mark Davison that would see this often overlooked or even maligned part of the United States transformed into a must visit location. Wymeria was the winning team of the "Your Move" new venture competition held by CEU Business School in partnership with NASDAQ OMX and Prezi.

CEU Business School celebrated its 25th anniversary by presenting a vision for management education with the publication of "Free Market in Its Twenties: Modern Business Decision Making in Central and Eastern Europe," a peer-reviewed, faculty-authored book with a foreword by George Soros, founder of CEU. Soros hosted a book launch in Budapest June 21 with CEU Business School Dean Mel Horwitch and special guest Harvard Business School Dean Nitin Nohria.

Six hundred students from more than 70 countries received master’s and doctoral degrees from Central European University at the 23rd annual graduation ceremony June 21. Also at the event, the CEU Open Society Prize, awarded for substantial contributions to the creation of an open society, was presented to European Commissioner of International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva.

The Roma Access Programs (RAP) held its annual year-end Roma Graduate Preparation Program (RGPP) student seminar on June 16-17, in which all 22 RGPP students presented their final research papers to an audience consisting of their peers, their academic tutors and English teachers, CEU faculty, as well as alumni, donor representatives, and friends of the program.

CEU Business School alumnus Ashwin Kutty (IMM, ’04) was recognized by the Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance for leadership of his multimedia design firm, WeUsThem. On May 21 he was presented the Alliance’s Peter Brojde Award for Canada’s Next Generation Executive Leadership, at a special gala in Ottawa.
