CEU has issued its 2014 update of an annual report that documents the University's substantial financial, scholarly, and cultural contributions to Hungary. It serves as a resource for those seeking information about CEU's economic role, support of Hungarian students, local alumni numbers and activities, facilities open to the public, academic and research partnerships with Hungarian institutions, summer programs open to Hungarians, outreach and civic engagement with the Hungarian community, and role in revitalizing the historic downtown neighborhoods.

Sigma Technology Hungary has recently given financial support to CEU’s Roma Access Program that aims to help young Roma students to advance their academic and professional careers. The New York Times cited the Roma Graduate Preparation Program as the “de facto hub for an elite group of young Roma intellectuals” in Europe.

University of Groningen Senior Lecturer Monika Baar is the winner of the third annual European Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Social Sciences and Humanities. The award, initiated by CEU Provost and Pro-Rector Liviu Matei and overseen by the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) aims to promote excellence in teaching across the European Higher Education Area. Baar, a 1995 graduate of CEU (MA in History), earned her doctorate at the University of Oxford.

CEU alumna Rita Csiszar (Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, 1998/99) is a teacher, linguist, and sociologist. After her “exciting, inspiring and enriching” year at CEU, she did her PhD in Applied Linguistics.”I have spent part of my working life in academia; taking up teaching assignments and working on various research projects in different countries. The most recent one was ELDIA, European Language Diversity for All, at the University of Vienna. My job experience also includes working for NGOs, such as the International Organization for Migration in Budapest.

Hungarian news portal vs.hu reported on what foreigners like about living in Hungary. They interviewed six young people who came to Budapest and stayed. Derya and Gabriela, who study at CEU’s Department of Medieval Studies, emphasized the architecture, which carries the imprint of the past centuries like a living book of history. Derya, who comes from Turkey, was amazed by how much freedom people have here. ”In Hungary, everybody behaves and dresses anyway they like! In my country, if somebody looks and acts different, people exclude them and speak ill of them.
