Ildiko Torok wants to see more decision makers with an education in public policy, who could facilitate coherent and effective policymaking to empower Roma women in Hungary.
Torok, a recent graduate of CEU's Roma Graduate Preparation Program (RGPP), sees assisting the empowerment of Roma women in Hungary as the main mission in her career.
“Roma women are disadvantaged in multiple ways, not only as members of a minority, not only because their prospects of lowincome and few chances at employment, but also in their roles as women,” Torok said.

On September 11, hundreds of students gathered at the Welcome Afternoon to meet and get to know more about student life at CEU. Dean of Students Chrysovalantis Margaritidis welcomed the incoming students to the University. In keeping with CEU tradition, new students pinned a flag on their home countries on a world map, had tea and a chat with former CEU students at the Alumni Teahouse, and learned about volunteering opportunities. Exciting new student clubs were born, various CEU units and cultural partners were represented at the event.

Provost/Pro-Rector Liviu Matei presented the 2015 CEU Award for Outstanding Research to Professor Botond Koszegi of the Department of Economics at CEU’s 25th Academic Year Opening Ceremony on September 21, 2015. Similarly to the Yrjo Jahnsson Award Koszegi received earlier this year, the CEU Award for Outstanding Research also recognizes his contribution to the theoretical foundations of behavioral economics, and its application to public finance and contract theory.

Professor Tibor Tajti of the Department of Legal Studies and Assistant Professor Levente Littvay of the Department of Political Science were chosen as the recipients of the 2015 CEU Distinguished Teaching Award. The awards were conferred at CEU’s 25th Academic Year Opening Ceremony on September 21, 2015.

The Center for Religious Studies has awarded Dr. Alba Fedeli (University of Birmingham) the CEU Humanities Initiative Religious Studies Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship, hosted by the Center for Religious Studies. The two-year position commences this September 2015. Fedeli will be conducting research on Early Quranic Manuscripts and their Relationship as Studied through Phylogenetic Software.

Edit Kalman has been appointed Head of Recruitment, effective August 1, 2015. Edit has been working at CEU since 2008 and served as Acting Head of the Student Recruitment Office during the previous academic year.

The following appointments have been approved by the Senate effective August 1, 2015:
The Senate approved the appointment of Tibor Varady as Professor Emeritus.
The Senate elected Vlad Naumescu as the new chair of the Ethical Research Committee, succeeding Prem Kumar Rajaram.
The Senate elected Karoly Bard as the new chair of the Disciplinary Committee, succeeding Eva Fodor.
The Senate approved that Andrzej Baniak’s application for the ‘egyetemi tanar’ title be submitted to the Hungarian Accreditation Committee (MAB).

Established in 1996, CEU Summer University (SUN) has offered its rich selection of research and policy-oriented interdisciplinary courses for the 20th time this summer. The program hosted 522 students from 89 countries and 193 faculty who participated in 19 courses during June and July.

The role of research administrators in universities or institutions is now more important than ever, given the increasing need for external research funding. Administrators’ work can make or break a project and define an institution’s collaborations, since cultural and procedural differences in dealing with project administration are inherent to European research consortia. Projects simply cannot perform without efficient processes.
