CEU has announced the call for applications for its fifth annual European Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Social Sciences and Humanities. The award, launched in 2011, is the first and only such pan-European honor and is accompanied by the €5,000 Diener prize.

Dr. Shakuntala Banaji, lecturer and programme director of the Master's in Media, Communication and Development in the Department of Media and Communications at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), has been selected as recipient of the fourth annual European Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Social Sciences and Humanities. The award, initiated by CEU Provost and Pro-Rector Liviu Matei and overseen by the University's Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) aims to promote excellence in teaching across the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).

Helga Dorner, lecturer at the Center for Teaching and Learning, has been named a 2015 EDEN Fellow by the European Distance and E-Learning Network (EDEN) in recognition of demonstrated excellence in professional practice in the field of flexible and distance learning. Founded in the UK in 1991, EDEN is the largest professional organization in Europe dedicated to the advancement of open, distance, flexible and e-learning. Dorner will receive the award at the organization’s annual conference in Barcelona on June 9th.

CEU alumna Monika Baar (HIST’ 95) won a consolidator grant worth €2 million for her innovative research project Rethinking Disability: The Global Impact of the International Year of Disabled Persons (1981) in Historical Perspective.
Baar, who won the European Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Social Sciences and Humanities offered by CEU in 2014, will use the funding to study the global impact of the UN Year of Disabled Persons in 1981.

Students are familiar with course and professor evaluations but some might not have had the opportunity to give mid-course feedback that could improve their learning experience. CEU Associate Professor of Environmental Sciences and Policy Tamara Steger wanted to see what kind of difference it could make, so she applied for and won a CEU Teaching Development Grant and is working on the project in consultation with the University's Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL).
