As part of a package of new initiatives aiming at providing renewed clarity of institutional direction at CEU, a series of university-wide interdisciplinary seminars was launched as a forum for faculty members and doctoral students from across the University to debate advanced and also timely topics that are relevant beyond the scholarly area or areas covered covered by a particular academic unit, and plan joint cross-academic unit projects. Three seminars have been held so far.

CEU, as it prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary, has launched the Intellectual Themes Initiative as part of a process to explore and develop new activities that encourage cross-disciplinary teaching and research, prompt new forms of civic engagement, enhance the academic profile of CEU and contribute to shaping its future institutional direction. A call for proposals, together with a full description of the initiative, was circulated to all members of the CEU community on November 11, 2015.

CEU has announced the call for applications for its fifth annual European Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Social Sciences and Humanities. The award, launched in 2011, is the first and only such pan-European honor and is accompanied by the €5,000 Diener prize.

Central European University (CEU) is offering a number of full scholarship packages for Syrian citizens at the master's and doctoral level for Academic Year 2016/2017. Applications are welcome for all academic areas for the full length of the program. Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit.

CEU’s Opening Ceremony, held September 21, celebrated the start of the 2015-2016 academic year and also launched the University’s 25th Anniversary. The incoming class, more than 600 students from a record 107 countries, received a special welcome from President and Rector John Shattuck.
Pro-Rector’s Office Announces CEU Humanities Initiative Grant Winners and Calls for New Applications

As part of CEU's commitment to both the humanities and interdisciplinary teaching and research, the University launched a Humanities Initiative in spring 2014. The Initiative provides incentives for new cross-departmental and interdisciplinary research and teaching activities in the humanities, and to infuse CEU social science programs with perspectives, approaches and accomplishments taken from the humanities.

Universities can play a positive role in the development and preservation of open society and democracies if they are granted academic freedom and autonomy, according to participants in the conference, “The University and the Transformations of Democracy,” held at CEU June 20. The event was hosted by the new Yehuda Elkana Center for Higher Education at CEU and the Frontiers of Democracy Initiative.

More than 600 CEU students from nearly 80 countries received their master's or doctoral degrees at this year's graduation ceremony on June 21, the University's twenty-fourth commencement. These graduates join a body of 12,000 CEU alumni who are distinguishing themselves as the next generation of leaders and scholars in the region and beyond.

CEU Provost and Pro-Rector Liviu Matei assessed the current state of the Bologna Process and its future in a report for the Ministerial Conference of the European Higher Education Area on May 15 in Yerevan, Armenia. Matei, who is also a professor in the Department of Public Policy, presented the findings of his report, which served as a key background document in preparation for the conference.

Budapest, May 7, 2015 – An international team of higher education experts led by CEU Provost and Pro-Rector Liviu Matei had the honor of meeting Nobel Prize recipient and leader of the National League for Democracy in Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi, and several members of Parliament on April 30 and May 1 in Yangon. Dr. Suu Kyi is chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Education Reform. The meeting was coordinated and also attended by representatives of the International Higher Education Support Program (HESP) of the Open Society Foundations.
