CEU's Open Society Archives (OSA) was renamed the Vera and Donald Blinken Open Society Archives at a Nov. 3 dedication event in honor of the couple, who have provided a major bequest to sustain the institution. Their gift will create a permanent endowed fund, which will allow the Archives to expand its critical work in preserving one of the world's most valuable archival collections related to the Cold War, human rights movements and grave international human rights violations.

Verzio addresses a wide range of issues, including surveillance states, refugee experiences, drone warriors, left-wing radicals, censored testimonies, anti-globalist fighters, totalitarian role-games, archival treasures, secret police confessions, environmental activists, and much more. Besides showcasing the best recent documentaries, Verzio organizes workshops, masterclasses, and student screenings and works towards creating a forum where films are examined creatively and critically.

Open Society Archives hosts Surveillance. Secret Police Film Festival, featuring 16 films from five former communist countries. The festival runs through December 2.

In this four-day filmmaking workshop focusing on the refugee crisis, participants will make short films about one person or one family, a place, situation or attitudes represented by citizens in European countries. The workshop, hosted by the Open Society Archives and the Visual Studies Platform at CEU, will be held November 11-14 at CEU. It is free of charge and open to filmmakers and students interested in documentary and human rights.

In 11 years, Verzio Film Festival has shown more than 600 films from 60 countries which were seen by more than 60,000 viewers. Verzio, held annually by the Open Society Archives at CEU and Verzio Film Foundation, is the only human rights documentary film festival in Hungary. The festival is a committed promoter of democratic values, rule of law, human rights, and critical thinking, showcasing creative documentary films from all over the world addressing important social and political issues. The films are accompanied by debates with filmmakers and human rights activists.

Over 120 guests gathered at OSA on April 9 for the first Hungarian preview of Laura Poitras’ Oscar-winning documentary, CitizenFour. Co-hosted with the Center for Media, Data and Society (CMDS), and with a professional audience of journalists, lawyers, civil society activists, academics and students, the event began with a half-hour live discussion over Skype with Anthony Romero, (executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union, and Edward Snowden's lawyer in the US) and Gill Phillips (director of editorial legal services, The Guardian).
