University of Glasgow Professor of Public Law Jim Murdoch was chosen as the recipient of the fifth annual European Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Social Sciences and Humanities. The award, initiated by the Central European University’s Provost and Pro-Rector Liviu Matei and overseen by the University’s Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), aims to promote excellence in teaching across the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). Murdoch will be given the Award and its accompanying €5,000 Diener Prize at CEU's Opening Ceremony for the 2016-17 academic year in September.

CEU hosted the Erasmus Staff Week April 11-15 with the theme “Managing a Global University: What Does It Take?” and participants from 10 countries from Iceland to Kyrgyzstan. CEU, with students from 107 countries and faculty and staff from 49, and strategic partnerships from the U.S. to Poland, Kyrgyzstan to Myanmar, was pleased to host the event and exchange ideas and experience with Erasmus member universities on topics from recruitment to admissions, partnerships to human resources, communications to research collaboration.

Since 2010, CEU has been celebrating Earth Day in a variety of ways from hosting sustainability fairs to planting a friendship tree in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy and CEU's home district mayor. This year, nearly 20 volunteers gathered in CEU's Japanese Garden to give the area a good spring clean by weeding, repotting and planting new seedlings and young plants for the Edible Garden.

As the completion date of Phase I of the campus redevelopment project is approaching colleagues have been asking about the plans for the next phase of the project and the locations of departments/offices that will be affected by this next phase. The Campus Redevelopment Office is in the midst of finalizing these plans and will have an update for the entire community by the end of this month or early May.

A selection of CEU Press titles was exhibited at the 2016 annual conference of the British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies (BASEES), the largest such gathering in Europe. The event, held at the Fitzwilliam and Churchill Colleges in Cambridge, UK, April 2-4, attracted over 400 with papers in politics, history, sociology and geography, film and media, languages and linguistics, literatures and cultures, economics.
