Companies are measuring employees’ on-line collaboration activities, but unfortunately they can only measure the quantitative factor of their social interaction neglecting totally the qualitative factor. Big Data Insights, an elective course offered for A1MBA and Executive MBA students at CEU Business School earlier this month turned out to be the most popular course this year. Over 60 students participated from all across the School and other CEU departments, some even flew over from the School’s Warsaw partner, WUT Business School.

As it prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary, CEU has launched the University-wide Intellectual Themes Initiative. This is a major new institutional endeavor at CEU, meant to promote exploring and developing new activities that encourage cross-disciplinary teaching and research, prompt new forms of civic engagement, enhance the academic profile of CEU and contribute to shaping its future institutional direction. The first call for proposals, together with a full description of the initiative, was circulated to all members of the CEU community in November 2015.

The Hungarian Red Cross, with the cooperation of the External Relations Office, will hold a blood drive on Feb. 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the TIGY Room (Nador 11, room 006, ground floor, entrance in courtyard). To register, participants will need to produce one form of ID from each of the following three categories: 1) official ID/passport; 2) residence card/residence permit; or 3) TAJ card/EU health insurance card (blue) or national social security card. After being registered, volunteers will receive a simple blood test to determine if they are eligible to participate.

CEU launched CEU OLIve, a series of weekend courses for registered refugees and asylum seekers in Hungary on Jan. 16 with five courses and 43 students. The program is run and courses are taught by more than 30 student, faculty and staff volunteers from across the CEU community. OLIve will run every Saturday for the duration of the winter term, and then a new program will begin in the spring term and also run every weekend.

The refugee crisis was amplified by a failure of western intervention policies, the loss of control of European borders, and insufficient support for refugee camps, according to Professor Michael Ignatieff of Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, who spoke Jan. 12 and 14 at CEU.

Hungarian daily Uj Neplap reports about the experiences of Orsolya Vasarhelyi, PhD student at CEU’s Center for Network Science, one of the winners of the Bridge Budapest Fellowship for Talents. The one-month fellowship is for Hungarian university students and journalists to gain practical experience at the founding companies of Bridge Budapest: NNG, Prezi, and Ustream.
Vasarhelyi accompanied her mentor from NNG Global Infotainment Technologies to Dubai, India, South-Korea and Japan to see different business environments in action.
