Hosted by CEU's Student Union in the CEU Residence Center, this year's Intercultural Festival welcomed representatives of 24 countries on January 28. Students, dressed in national costumes, performed their traditional songs and dances on stage and served traditional dishes.

Head to the Jegterasz outside Arena Plaza mall on Feb. 10 and pull on a pair of skates to celebrate one of CEU's (c)oldest traditions, the 14th Annual Valentine's Day Ice Skating Party! No skates? Rent them on the spot. Can't skate? There'll be three trainers from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. to teach you the basics.

The CEU Sports Center, located in Hild Jozsef Elementary School, Nador utca 12, 2nd floor, now offers meditation sessions every Friday afternoon between 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.

In spring 2016, a CEU doctoral student unexpectedly fell into a coma while visiting family at home in Armenia and has remained in coma since. The student’s family is looking after him and making every effort to provide for his hospitalization and medical care. Unfortunately, the condition of the student has not improved and this is taking a toll on the family finances. By now, it’s become impossible for the family to continue financing the medical attention that the student needs.

The Hungarian Red Cross will hold its annual blood drive at CEU on Feb. 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the October Hall (Oktober 6. street 7, ground floor, across from the main entrance). To register, participants will need to produce one form of ID from each of the following three categories: 1) official ID/passport; 2) residence card/residence permit and official proof of address in Hungary; 3) TAJ card/EU health insurance card (blue) or national social security card.

On January 22, a group of CEU students participated in a community cooking event, volunteering their time to help local people in need.
Organized by the Student Leadership and Service Office (SLSO), the cooking began at 3 p.m. at the Oltalom Charity Association center and students prepared and served 150 hot meals.
The volunteers were also given a brief history of the shelter and learned about what it does to help homeless people.

The common critique of media- and ratings-driven politics envisions democracy falling hostage to a popularity contest. By contrast, the following book by Hungarian sociologist Peter Csigo reconceives politics as a speculative Keynesian beauty contest that alienates itself from the popular audience it ceaselessly targets. Political actors unknowingly lean on collective beliefs about the popular expectations they seek to gratify, and thus do not follow popular public opinion as it is, but popular public opinion about popular public opinion.

The essays in the book, edited by M. Mark Stolarik, professor of history at the University of Ottawa, compare the Czech Republic and Slovakia since the breakup of Czechoslovakia in 1993. The papers deal with the causes of the divorce and discuss the political, economic and social developments in the new countries. This is the only English-language volume that presents the synoptic findings of leading Czech, Slovak, and North American scholars in the field.

The CEU Distinguished Teaching Award recognizes CEU faculty members for promoting high standards of teaching, linked with the mission and institutional ambitions of CEU. Initiated by the Provost and established by the CEU Senate in 2014, this award not only underscores CEU's long-standing commitment to excellence in teaching, but also provides an opportunity for faculty, students and alumni to acknowledge teaching at CEU that has had a special impact on their academic work and lives.
The Award will be presented at the CEU Opening Ceremony in September 2017.
