SozialMarie is the oldest prize for social innovation in Europe and honors since 2005 every year 15 outstanding projects in the field of social innovation. Beyond a financial recognition adding up to EUR54,000, SozialMarie primarily offers a public platform for projects that by means of new approaches provide innovative answers to societal challenges.

Associate Professor Katalin Szende, head of the Department of Medieval Studies at CEU, gave a lecture at the University of Vienna November 2 as part of a series on Hungarian history organized jointly by Collegium Hungaricum Wien, the Institut für Osteuropäische Geschichte and the Institut für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung at the University of Vienna.

The book "Pagans and Christians in the Late Roman Empire: New Evidence, New Approaches," edited by Marianne Saghy, associate professor at the Department of Medieval Studies at CEU and Edward Schoolman of the University of Nevada, Reno, was launched at an event at the University of Pecs November 20. The book was published by CEU Press as part of the Medievalia series.

The famed knight of the Round Table, Sir Lancelot du Lac, may very well have been based on Hungary's King Laszlo, also known as Ladislaus I, according to Stephen Pow, doctoral student in the Department of Medieval Studies at CEU, who presented his argument at an event at the Hungarian Institute of Paris co-hosted by the International Medieval Society of Paris.

CEU welcomed over 190 guests from 14 countries on campus at the annual Open House event on November 17. Hosted by the Student Recruitment Office, CEU Open House offered prospective students a chance to catch a glimpse into student life at CEU, visit open classes and presentations, attend a CV Clinic session, tour the campus and talk to representatives of their academic department of interest. The organizers wish to thank faculty, current students and staff for participating in the event.

Historians studying the medieval and early modern period take different approaches to reconstruct personhood and its models, according to Gadi Algazi, professor and head of the Department of History at Tel Aviv University, and associate research fellow at Humboldt University, Berlin. Algazi spoke at CEU November 6-9 as part of the Natalie Zemon Davis Annual Lecture Series, hosted by the Department of Medieval Studies and the Department of History.

Trust and a sense of belonging, as well as an emphasis on duty in addition to rights, are key to preserving the freedoms of democratic society, according to writer and philosopher Sir Roger Scruton, speaking at CEU November 16 as part of the Rethinking Open Society series. Scruton, whose lecture was entitled “Liberalism and Loyalty,” is a fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington and a contributing editor to The New Atlantis.
