Tibor Varady, chair of the International Business Law Program and university professor in the Department of Legal Studies has been appointed to the rank of professor emeritus, effective August 1, 2015. Varady is an internationally-recognized scholar and expert on international commercial arbitration, private international law, and international business transactions. He was on the faculty of the Novi Sad Law School in the former Yugoslavia and served as director of its Center for International Studies for many years.

CEU’s School of Public Policy, the Center for European Union Research, the French Institute of Budapest, and the French Embassy organized a series of discussions at CEU on May 19 to reflect on freedom, religion, and security in the aftermath of the Charlie Hebdo attack on January 7, 2015. The event was part of CEU’s Frontiers of Democracy series.

CEU alumnus Uchenna Emelonye was appointed Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Uganda on May 1, the latest step in a career dedicated to the creation of open societies and the rule of law in Africa. His studies at CEU, where he earned a Master of Laws in Human Rights in 2004, remain relevant and useful, Emelonye said.

CEU earned the best rankings in its history in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) subject ranking, published April 29. CEU's programs related to politics and international studies jumped to 29th in the world, and 7th in Europe.

Fourteen CEU students and faculty had the opportunity to join representatives of five other Hungarian universities and attend an informal meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel during her visit to Budapest on Feb. 5. The event was hosted by Andrassy University Budapest.

David Nagy (LEGS ’13), who studied International Business Law, represents the new generation of Hungarian politicians in Slovakia. In addition to working as a legal associate, he has also become a member of the city council of his hometown, Nove Zamky, a town of 40,000 inhabitants.

Peter Brocka (LEGS ’09)won the mayoral election in Trnava, one of the seven regional capitals in Slovakia, earlier this month and is slated to take office on December 12. Brocka was an independent candidate. Elizabeth Garrett, former visiting faculty at CEU’s Department of Legal Studies, has been elected Cornell's 13th president, and the first woman to hold that post. Garrett taught courses in the Comparative Constitutional Law (CCL) program at CEU in academic year 1998-99, 2000-01, 2002-03 and 2004-05. As President of Cornell, she will replace David Skorton July 1, 2015.
